TipsEvalInfoWeb.htm: For tips on using the web to evaluate information.  Web Evaluation Criteria for criteria for evaluation.

http://www.martinlutherking.org/
This site appears at first to be "Historical Writings" and a biographical "tribute" to Dr. King.  On closer examination we find the real purpose of this page is to discredit Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement. If you read the material on the page the bias becomes clear.  Chase down the source and you will find http://www.stormfront.org/ email address is a white supremacist organization. For those with knowledge the web page is controlled by David Duke a known leader of the KKK.  His name was well known 10-20 years ago but he hasn't made the news in recent years since he was in jail.  See if you can find information about David Duke and the organization connected to this page, evaluate this page in terms of the Web Evaluation Criteria

http://pubweb.acns.nwu.edu/~abutz/di/intro.html: Looks good, from an academic institution, even though it explains away the holocaust which our background knowledge would reject.  The reality is this is an article from an engineering professor not a history professor.  The author would have little credibility in this area. Other sites indicate the widespread disagreement with Dr. Butz views. The president of Northwestern University one time had a web page explaining the University's position but it doesn't seem to be there anymore. A recent comment in the school newspaper has some comments. Link to this site Daily Northwestern and search for "Butz". The web site Teaching Zack To Think provides an analysis and links treating a high school student's (lack of knowledge and inexperienced) experience with this site.

Take the "World's Shortest Political Quiz," courtesy of Advocates for Self Government. Who is this group and do they have a bias, if so what is their bias? What is the purpose for this site? Look at the results and at the descriptions given of "Other Political Philosophies." Are there questions that weren't asked that might have placed you in a different category? Is there anything about the survey (sampling method, that is, who took the survey) that might cause  you to be suspicious of these findings? Is any of the language used to describe the categories "loaded" or "biased" and,  if so, how? The web page belongs to the Libertarian party--the rest you can answer with close examination. The earlier version for this site did not clearly identify the source, at least to me, and there appeared to be an attempt to make me see myself as a potential Libertarian. This revised site seems to be a more accurate political quiz.  For further information search for "libertarian" or specific people mentioned on the web site on Google" to find out more about the site.  Evaluate in terms of the Web Evaluation Criteria

http://www.southern.com/southern/label/CRC/1238.html
"This page describes how the media can take information and twist the meaning and truth over time. They jump to conclusions to sell the story.  The story is about a spliced tape between Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Regan. It was made by the punk rock band Crass during the Falklands war." This was contributed by a a Soc120 student fall 2001 What is the purpose of this page? The comments in the page give ways to evaluate the credibility.  Evaluate in terms of the Web Evaluation Criteria

Evaluate the following as a group:

http://www.dhmo.org/ A Con position on the availability of DHMO. What about the credibility for this page.
http://www.circus.com/~nodhmo/ Another Con position on DHMO
http://www.armory.com/~crisper/DHMO/ A proponent of DHMO
DHMO is a double hydrogen and a single oxygen molecule commonly known as H2O or water! A knowledgeable person might have recognizes this spoof, an inside joke. Use the Web Evaluation Criteria and see where someone not aware of this might determine the true nature of the sites.

(9)-
http://www.sree.net/stories/feline.html A study of cats reactions to bearded men.  In reality a spoof. Check this for further hoaxes:  http://www.sree.net/tips/hoax.html

(10)-
http://www.ozelink.com/natures_energies/discs.htm An interesting site about low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields emitted by Cathode Ray Tubes (e.g., your television at home, or the monitor that you are using to read this document). Read carefully and check the information and the source.  Is this information reliable? (link stolen from Kurt Asher) I care for my animals so I have purchase Animal Ch'i Energy Disk for my cats and dog.  Couldn't get any for my goldfish so I guess they will have to "swim for themselves".

(11)--
http://www.sciencedaily.com/ a site that claims to be "Your link to the latest research news" (stolen from Kurt Asher's interpretation). (link stolen from Kurt Asher) Looks good to me but pop in nature. Evaluate in terms of the Web Evaluation Criteria

(12)--/-
http://www.fda.gov/ Would this be a legitimate site for a term paper? Compare this with site  http://www.dhmo.org/.  Evaluate each site and explain
The EPA site looks good to me. You always have to some extent be a skeptic even for government sites since politics can effect the content and interpretation as indicated by the revelations1 revelations2 about the FDA.  In general we would accept the information on government sites. Evaluate in terms of the Web Evaluation Criteria

(13)--/-
http://www.wto.org/ and HTTP://www.gatt.org/ Compare and evaluate these sites. Both seem to represent the same organization.  Does one represent the World Trade Organization and the other not? (stolen from Christy Gavin).  Looking at some of the links and being knowledgeable about TWO it is pretty easy to see that  http://www.gatt.org/regime/ does not represent the WTO. Evaluate in terms of the Web Evaluation Criteria

(14)--
http://home.inreach.com/kumbach/velcro.html   California's climate and soil conditions make the state an ideal venue for and successful producer of both strains of Velcro. (stolen from Christy Gavin) Knowledge and experience give this away as a spoof. Evaluate in terms of the Web Evaluation Criteria

Evaluate the following as a group:
http://www.nixtro.com/pentagon121.swf
http://www.911inplainsight.com/
http://www.nixtro.com/pentagon121.swf
http://www.geocities.com/united_airlines_flight_93/
http://www.flight93crash.com/flight93_eyewitness.html
http://home.earthlink.net/~killtown/flight93.html
Taken as a group how do you evaluate these web sites discussing 9/11.  The sites all pro port to refute the official account of 9/11.  These types of refutations are common for major events.  We are familiar with the Kennedy assignation and the various interpretations.  The same was true for Princess Diana's death, the bombing of the Oklahoma Federal Building and Abe Lincoln's death.  Do a Google search for "conspiracy" for a "small" sample. Your best decision is to not accept the information on these sites for an academic paper unless of course you are writing about conspiracy theories.  You might also use the information if making a popular movie, arguing a political position, etc. Evaluate in terms of the Web Evaluation Criteria

(16)-
http://www.npr.org/
NPR, National Public Radio.  A generally accepted credible source.  Many of their programs offer sources that can be verified.  For academic papers it is best to go to the original sources, don't just report the NPR program.  Remember like all media sources there are biases on the part of the source so be aware of the biases when evaluating the information. Evaluate in terms of the Web Evaluation Criteria

(17)-
SFGate
http://www.sfgate.com/
The web site of the San Francisco Chronicle. Evaluate just like you would the newspaper. Web sites for major newspapers are great to use for current events around the world and archive purpose if the feature is available. Just like other resources evaluating the content is necessary, what are the biases? Selection of  articles and their content with omission often the problem for popular media sources. All of the information my not be from a reliable/credible journalist. Evaluate in terms of the Web Evaluation Criteria

(18)-
http://www.consumerreports.org/
The web site of Consumers Reports.  Evaluate just like you would the magazine. Consumer Reports  is a very credible source for evaluations for consumers.  Dispute the appearance of what looks like advertisements, the only real advertisements are for the magazine and related items. Consumer Reports is a non profit. Check their about us statement for specifics. Just like other mass media what are the biases and does it effect the information.  I am a long time subscriber of  Consumer Reports and I also have a fixer upper house.  I know one of their biases is safety (cars, appliances, etc.) so when I look for a paint remover I will frequently accept their unacceptable.  The paint remover was the most effective and efficient at removing but was considered unsafe.  I believe I can work with the product and my interest is in the most effective paint remover with which I think I can safely work. There are other biases some would consider liberal or progressive.  Determine the usefulness for yourself. Evaluate in terms of the Web Evaluation Criteria

Books- Use your web and Critical Thinking skills to evalaute the following:
(26)--
APA 5th Ed Book

Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Fifth Edition  -/+
by American Psychological Association

Use Google and
with quotes type in the books name.  Purpose in evaluating this resource is to determine who would need to use this book and why (aside from credibility…)?

(26)
Amy Tan Book Cover
The Opposite of fate: a book of musings by Amy Tan -/+
Use Google and with quotes type in the books name. This book is non-fiction but would we consider it a scholarly source? Of course we may be looking for reviews to report in a paper and we could find them this way.

(27)-
Lies and The...Book Cover

Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right by Al Franken

         and

(28)-
Treason: Liberal Treachery f
rom the Cold War to the War on Terrorism -- by Ann Coulter
[Note: there was a legal threat for using pictures, material, etc. from this book without permission--I choose not to place the books picture here to avoid legal problems.]

Be weary of the content in books like these.  These are partisan books supporting a political position.  The facts may be accurate or inaccurate.
Information may be quite useful if you can find another source. Al Frankin's book lists sources.  You should not rely on the book alone as an academic resource except in writing a paper discussing these types of books.
