70s
Mainframe computers continue their spread, mini
computers developed, timeshare
on the DEC PDP11 and
later VAX.
Timeshare becomes standard at CSUB and first labs open. Me: I get a job at CSUB 1972. Academic computer use at CSUB limited to 2 teletype machines connected to a CDC computer at CS Northridge--very unreliable and non use used as administrative reason for not needing student access to computer technology. I develop "Computer Games" class using the VAX computer. Learn TECO and use as text editor (word processor) for class materials (Some difficulties with computer personnel since this was "using the computer as a secretary". With help develop "sleeper" to work around computer use rules and print multiple copies for class distribution. Also have a "hacker" friend develop and co-operating system for accounts in case computer use is blocked by computer personnel. Technology: For most people computers were not something for which they had a direct contact. Many were fearful of computers and their results billing errors and requirements to become involved in computer output. |
