Browsing with Netscape Links
(1) Web pages have hyper links. When clicked hyper links take you to a new location. A hyper link is usually hot text, text, with a distinctive color and usually underlined.  A hyper link may also be a picture with a distinctly colored  border line. I clicked on the "hot text" link,The Walter W. Stiern Library  on the CSUB home page, to link to the CSUB library home page
CSUB Library Home page: http://www.lib.csubak.edu/
Netscape CSUB Lib Page

(2) I could return to the CSUB home page by clicking the back, Left Arrow Back, button at the  left of the browser tools.  I could click CSUB Home Page Return Button  That's pretty much the way you can browse around the net starting from any home page.

(3) You can return to the home page for your browser by clicking the home, Home Button, function key (the home page for your browser can be set to any web site)

Searching for a topic
(1) First click on the search, Netscape Search Button, button in Netscape's tool bar. When the search page opens scroll down to the text entry box. Type in your search term. I typed in "Bakersfield" and clicked the Search key.
Netscape Search
You could also use Browse Netscape's Web Directory, on this page are click the Search Tools button to access searches for phone numbers, maps, etc..

At heavy net use times, 9-5 work hours (don't forget the other time zones), you may on occasion have connection difficulty when performing a search. For help improving searching skills, check http://www.csubak.edu/~jross/classes/GS390/Internet/WEB_SEARCHING/WebSearch.html

Using Bookmarks
Bookmarks are web addresses you have add to Netscape's "Bookmark" list so that you can go to this site without typing in the URL each time. To do this

(1) Click and hold the Bookmark, Boohmark Button , on Netscape's menus.  If the bookmark button is not visible, click the expand tabs ShowToolbars Buttons on the left side.   Using bookmarks is very useful for your home computer or office computer.  It is not useful to save bookmarks in the CSUB labs since Netscape is reloaded each time the computer is started and all saved bookmarks are lost. You can however, use the bookmarks listed on the browser in CSUB labs.

(2) A list will appear listing web pages that have been book marked. Drag the mouse down the bookmark list and highlight your choice. Release the mouse button and Netscape will seek out and load the web page you selected.

(3) Adding bookmarks to your personal computer is quite simple.

(4)  You can choose Manage Bookmarks to organize your bookmarks.

On your personal browser you can set preferences, choices for your;  startup page, email addresses, web page appearances, etc.  The way to get to these choices is by:

(3) Make changes in Appearance, Navigator, Mail & Newsgroups,.. by clicking the area you want to change in the Category box

Note: One preference k-12 teachers may have to set to access the web in their classroom is a proxy.  Proxies allow only pages acceptable to the proxy list to be accessed.  For example to set the proxy that filters for Owens Primary BCSD:
(1) Click Advanced
(2) Click Proxies
(3) Select "Automatic Proxy Configuration"
(4) At Configuration Location (URL) type:
http://proxy.38.bcsd.k12.ca.us
