RunnerMail

(Edited 9/21/04 ADA)
This tutorial covers only the basic
necessities
for using RunnerMail, more is available experiment!
Note:
(1) Runner Mail is a web based mail program much
like
Hot Mail, Juno and other popular web mail programs. For those not
experienced with a web based mail program one characteristic may seem
difficult.
You should use RunnerMail's buttons to move around the program.
Do
not use the browser functions at the top of the page. This is for
security purposes. The purpose is to make sure you log out of
Runner
Mail and do not leave it accidentally open to your account. Others
could
send questionable messages.
(2) The Help page for RunnerMail, a question icon
in
most cases, opens a new browser window so you can simply
close
the page to go back to your mail. |
(1) Login: Go to the Runner
Mail web site

http://runner.csub.edu/
- Your User Name is your first initial and last
name
with no
spaces (mine is jross)
| Note: If there is more then one person with
the same
last name and first initial, the username for the next jross will have
a 1 added at the end of their first initial last name They will have
the
username jross1. This sequence will continue with jross2
then jross3, jross4, etc. If you have a common name try
1
then 2, 3,..at the end of your first initial and last name until you
find
your username. |
- Your password is the year you were born and the
last four
digits of your SSN#. For example, if a person was born in 1987 and
their
SSN# is 123-45-6789, their default password for their RunnerMail
account
will be 19876789.
- Press the Enter button
- If a dialog box appears, click Continue
to
accept
the security alert
- The following Runner Mail page will appear with
a
successful
log on. If don't get this page and you have tried a sequence of
numbers
after your first initial and last name, see the assistants in the
library computer lab or call the student help desk at (661)
665 - 6677.

Changing your Password: Change your
password ASAP
but be sure and create a password that is not obvious to others (a
combination
of numbers, symbols and alpha characters is best) and one you can
remember.
To change your password, once logged on to Runner mail:

- Click the
button, on the new page click Password
at the top
- In the Old Password box type in your
current password
(the year you were born and the last four digits of your SSN# for first
time users)
- In the New Password box type in your
created password--the
password is case sensitive so remember the case of characters.
(Your password should be one you can remember but not
one someone could guess and using at least 6 characters and numbers is
suggested) - In the Reenter Password
box retype
you newly
created password
- Click the Modify Button at the bottom
of
the Password
Modification box. Don't forget your new password.
- If you have another email account, you should
fill
out the
bottom form in Settings, Forgotten Password Recovery,
so
that you can have a RunnerMail password sent to this other email
address
if you forget your RunnerMail password. While in settings, scroll to
the
bottom, fill out the form and click Modify.
(a) Forgot
your
password
- If you forget your password and have
another
email
account that you have specified in the bottom dialog box in Settings,
see
above, go to the RunnerMail home page and click
Forgot
your password? and have a new RunnerMail password emailed to your
alternative
email account.
- Don't have another email account or did not
specify
it in Forgotten
Password Recovery then go by or call the help desk in the library
basement
at (661) 665 - 6677.

Add a "signature", an identification determined by you.
"Signatures"
should identify you clearly to the reader of your message.
Possibly
include an address, phone, etc.. A signature goes at the bottom
of
every message.

- Click the
button on the list of links on the left side in the start up page.
Click Compose
on the links at the top.

- In the Signature box type in
information
that will
identify you to the typical receiver of your messages
- Click the Update Button, at the bottom
of
the page
to complete signature change. You can change the signature on
individual
messages or change the standard signature in the future if you want. I
could for example make the following my standard signature and erase
irrelevant
information in each message:
Jim Ross
California State University Bakersfield
Sociology Anthropology Department
9001 Stockdale Highway
(805) 664-2384
E-mail: jross@csubak.edu
Bakersfield CA. 93311-1099
This signature is admittedly a bit of overkill!

(8) Checking
Mail Boxes: There are Mail Boxes for keeping
Drafts,
InBox,
Sent,
Trash
Can and other messages from CSUB provided in
RunnerMail.
You can also create new mail boxes for ordering your messages. Note:
The
mail boxes set up for CSUB information (ASI
Notices, CSUB Notices,
Classifieds,
FinAid
Notices. do not take up space in your personal mail area
and it is therefore not necessary to delete these.)
Click either Mailboxes
at the top, see above, are the
button on the list of links on the left side or the mailbox icon at the
top on most pages and a page with the list of your mail boxes will be
displayed.
- To open a Mail Box and display the
messages click
the mail box of your choice. Usually this is InBox
- Click the senders name to read
a message
Top
(9) Deleting old,
sent,
etc. mail: Since you have limited space for messages
(including
attachments) in your RunnerMail account, you should periodically delete
messages you no longer need (for example, I delete all class messages
at
the end of each quarter)
(a) Checking a Mailbox
- Open a Mail Box and display the
message
list
- Click on the left of the listed messages to
flag
them for
deletion, see below. You could also just click
to flag all messages.
- Click the Delete button under Flagged
(b) Your messages are not actually deleted
yet.
You must now open the Trash Can mail box click
then the Delete button to completely erase the messages.
(c) You can set up RunnerMail to automatically
delete
any messages in the Trash Can. Click Settings
scroll
down to Trash Management, click the down arrow by Message
Delete Method and make a choice. I choose Immediately
to shorten the number of steps. If you sometimes accidentally
delete
something you need to recover the Immediate option is not for
you.

(10) Redirecting to
another mail account: Many people have more then one email
account.
It is relatively easy to have all your RunnerMail messages forwarded to
another email account so that you only have to look at the one account
to see all your mail. Students should be careful when sending
email
from a non RunnerMail account to faculty. Many faculty, such as
myself,
always look at email messages from RunnerMail but frequently due to
time
do not get around to reading messages from other sources such as
AOL, YAHOO, MSN, since they are often "junk mail" are contain viruses.
I suggest always send messages to faculty members from your RunnerMail
account.
- Click the Rules link on the left of
the
page:
- Scroll down to the Redirect All Mail to: dialog
box
and do the following:
(a) Click the Redirect All Mail to: box
(b) Type in the address where you want all your email
directed. ( I redirected all my RunnerMail to my jross@csub.edu
account) Type in your other account here not
mine!
(c) Do not Redirect Automatic Messages I
left
blank so that these messages will be forwarded
(d) Keep a Copy I did not check this box
since
this would cause my RunnerMail space to fill up with messages I
received
at my other account.
(e) Preserve To/CC fields to have this
included
on the redirected message
(e) Update Click this button to record
the
new rule.

(11)
