Dr. Anne Bolin
An examination of the multiplicities of gender found cross-culturally including five major forms of gender variance: hermaphroditic genders; transformed genders also referred to as two-spirit traditions, alternative or third genders; cross-gendered roles, woman-marriage systems; and ritual cross gendering. 

The implications of gender variance for understanding the ongoing transformation of gender in North America will also be addressed.

 

Dr. Bolin has presented and published extensively in the research areas of sport ethnography and bodybuilding, gender and the body, human sexuality, and gender variance. 

Her publications include numerous articles and several books including her award winning book In Search of Eve: Transsexual Rites of Passage. Most recently, she co-authored an anthropology of human sexuality textbook with Patricia Whelehan, Perspectives on Human Sexuality.

"Denaturalizing Femininity: Culturing Women's Bodies"

An analysis of the bodily backlash and somatic debate surrounding feminine ideals of beauty from 1989 to the millennium expressed through the intersection of three forms of cultural embodiment for women: bodybuilding, fitness pageants and fashion magazines.



Again, students enrolled in General Studies 132 should attend the lectures on March 1st and 2nd (both sessions, Thursday evening and Friday morning) for credit.  A short typed critique on the events attended must be submitted for one (1) unit of credit.  Critiques can be sent to Dr. Jane Granskog, Department of Sociology/Anthropology, CSUB or delivered to her office at DDH/CC206 no later than March 16th, 2001.
