OPEN MIND DEVICE

This strategy provides a very rapid evaluation of students’ understanding of a segment of work.  It requires a minimum amount of teacher marking, at the same time reflecting a maximum of higher order thinking skills.

Caveat: Do not put this in the hands of a student aide or a classmate to grade.  This strategy requires your time to evaluate.

                                                                    ACTIVITY

·       Present each student with a hand out inscribed with the outline of head. (You may choose a window frame, a picture frame, or some other similar device.)

·       Require the student to record X number of symbols (whatever you want) or designs representative of a number of ideas you wish to check on from the reading or discussion of the assigned work.

·       Require the students to write no more than three sentences per symbol/image explaining its meaning or significance of each to the main idea being examined.
