Advances in Psychopharmacology and Recovery in Severe Mental Illness

The concept of "recovery" from mental illness is undergoing a paradigm shift in psychiatry. This progressive psycho-rehabilitative approach provides a framework in which more sophisticated and recover-oriented psychopharmacologic treatment plans can be made. However, adoption of this new paradigm shift faces many barriers, some of which include use of conventional educational and clinical paradigms. To the uninitiated, such barriers may appear challenging. There exists a need to educate psychiatrists that focus on practical items that clinicians can act upon immediatly in incremental steps to help shift the clinical paradigm of recovery in severe mental illness (SMI) and improve overall patient outcomes.
