Winnie and Pennie (white nose) are Dr. Turner's dogs. They were adopted from the Bakersfield SPCA in February 2008 as 2-month old puppies. They had the same mother, a Chow mix, but different fathers. Dogs of many breeds have appeared in art since the discovery of cave paintings. Breeders often refer to artists' historical paintings to document the history and origin of breeds. Many renowned artists have included their own dogs in their work. Because of her love of dogs, Dr. Turner collects art and prints with dogs in it. Her favorite painting with a dog is "Madame Charpentier with Her Children" (1878) by Pierre- Auguste Renoir. The painting features a Newfoundland. Dr. Turner's favorite contemporary artist who used dogs as subject matter is Govinder Nazran. She met Govinder while on a trip to London and has one of his works.
