Before coming to California State University, Bakersfield in 1989 Dianne Turner was a doctoral student and art education instructor at The Pennsylvania State University. She has taught art at the elementary, middle school and high school levels, including four years teaching elementary at Laurens School District #55 in Laurens, SC.
Turner's latest research activities include exploring ways that children's art can be integrated into the school curriculum to enhance children's test scores in reading and math. Her most recent vehicle for doing so was co-founding the CSUB Children's Art Institute (http://www.csub.edu/childrensartinstitute/).
Some of Turner's publications include publishing "Pre-service Teachers Teaching Art in the Elementary School" in Community Service Works On-Line Journal. Her work has appeared in P. J. Farris' book "Elementary and Middle School Social Studies: An Interdisciplinary, Multicultural Approach" (2003) and the renowned art education text by Frank Wachowiak and R. Clements "Emphasis Art: A Qualitative Art Program for Elementary and Middle Schools" (1993 and 1985). She publishes regularly in School Arts.
Turner was a member of the Editorial Board of School Arts magazine. She currently serves as an evaluator for the California Teaching Performance Assessment (TPAs) and just completed a term on the Pennsylvania State University Graduate School Alumni Society Board of Directors. She has been a regular presenter at NAEA national conferences.
In 2008, Turner received the Millie Ablin Excellence in Teaching Award from CSUB for her contributions to teaching (together with scholarship and service) in the field of art education for her work at the university, local schools, and in the community.
