Text: None: You will be given assignments from the library and the World Wide Web
(including the FACT web site) to read. You will be given a FACT notebook to use during
the course. Course web site: www.csub.edu/~dgermano/Courses/Bio323.htm
Objectives:
There are three main objectives of this course:
1. To be trained to care and feed the animals at the Facility for Animal Care and
Treatment (FACT).
2. To be trained to lead tours and host monthly open houses at FACT, and to give
shows off campus.
3. To learn the basics of bird biology by way of weekly lectures.
This is a relatively non-traditional course. Lecture times will be limited during the week. You will be expected to take seriously the care and feeding of the animals at FACT. Much of the effort in the course comes from your hands-on learning of caring for wild animals. Also, some time will be spent teaching others (mainly school children) about the biology and ecological importance of wild animals, especially the raptors, which constitute the majority of animals cared for at the facility.
You will demonstrate your understanding of bird biology, conservation, and how FACT works by written examinations (1 mid-term exam and a final). In addition, your will keep a log book of time spent working at FACT and you will write a conservation paper on a raptor species of your choice (but approved by me).
So how will you earn your grade? Here are the ways:
Mid-term Exam; 75 points
Final Exam: 100 points
Life History Paper: 50 points
My and Ms. Benton’s evaluation of your work habits: 100 points
TOTAL POINTS: 325 points (Grades will be determined from this total)
LECTURE / LABORATORY SCHEDULE
ANIMAL REHABILITATION
Biology 323 – CSUB Fall 2008
Because Biol. 323 has a schedule of tours and shows that change quarterly, it is impossible at the outset to tell you when you will be giving a tour or leading a show. Also, your schedule for feeding and cleaning cages at FACT will have to be worked out at the beginning of the quarter based on how many people take the class and how your schedule is set. Marlene and I will need to get your class/work schedule from you to determine when you are available. Generally, you can expect to care for animals at FACT some time during scheduled class times, but I will lecture at least once during the week and animals need to be cared for during the weekends. Also, most tours will be scheduled during class times, but some tours and shows will occur outside class times. Be flexible, we need to have your help with these events.
