CTAP8 Portfolio Level One Certification Check off
Course Information

Spring 2005

David Georgi, instructor

Background

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing adopted a standard requiring all elementary and secondary credential candidates to  demonstrate educational technology proficiency at two levels: for a preliminary preparation program and for a professional clear credential. CSUB meets this standard by using the certification system developed by the California Technology Assistance Project Region 8 (CTAP8). All Kern County public schools use this system for professional development in educational technology and often conduct workshops on specified skills.

How you can meet this standard

CTAP8 technology proficiency is demonstrated by compiling an annotated portfolio of artifacts for each skill. Some skills must be demonstrated to a Level III mentor or leader. ED SE 400 is a prerequisite for the secondary credential program and includes Level I certification. GS 277 will offer Level I certification in Fall 2005. Beginning in the Winter of 06, LS 390 will provide CTAP8 Level I certification. Note that one of these is also a portfolio check-off class with no instruction. Certification trainings are also offered by CTAP8 and at local schools.

ED CI 579 provides an independent study approach for obtaining CTAP8 Level One certification. It is designed for credential holding graduate students in highly unusual circumstances. Students taking this approach to CTAP8 certification are expected to be already thoroughly proficient in the requisite skills and able to assemble a portfolio independently.

No instruction is offered in ED CI 579 and many students have been unable to pass it.

GS 277, LS 390 or ED SE 400 are the preferred ways to assemble a portfolio.

The only course requirement is to complete a portfolio that demonstrates the proficiencies of the standard no later than May 27. Download the checklist and application from CTAP8 for your own reference. You must provide me with your address and school where you work (if applicable) so I can include them on the application. I will give a copy to the credential office as proof of your meeting the technology Level II requirement and I will mail the application to CTAP8, which will send you your level II certificate to the address you give me. Grading in this class is Credit/No Credit. Portfolios not completed on time will result in No Credit for the class.

Portfolios must be constructed in TaskStream, which includes a Presentation Portfolio file structure. If you do not have a TaskStream subscription by April 4, you will be dropped. You can learn to use TaskStream by taking the "Tour of the Tools" from its home page. Use the TaskStream email to contact me. As soon as you pay for your TS subscription, email me with a :0) in the body so I can activate your class account.

When you have a proficiency you want checked, click the button "Request Feedback" in the Folio Builder tool.

The skills requiring face to face demonstrations can be checked off by any Level Three mentor or leader, including me.

Please note that Level One certification is a prerequisite for ED CI 560, the course that certifies CTAP8 Level Two.

I have created a Discussion Board for students to help each other with portfolio construction or technical questions. Once in TS, click on Discussion Boards and then on 579 Helpdesk.

Detailed instructions and resources for assembling the portfolio, including using TaskStream, can be found HERE.

Here's how you get your CTAP8 Level I certification:

When you complete your folio, back up your data! Click on the "Manage Online Storage" button on the TS home page left frame and then on the tab to the right "Pack-It-Up." Read the directions and plan a time to back up all your TS work. You might want to burn a CD to bring to job interviews. If you let your TS subscription lapse without backing up, you will not have access to your data unless you pay for a new subscription.
