CTAP8 Portfolio Certification Check off
Course Information
David Georgi, instructor
Background
The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing adopted a standard requiring all elementary and secondary credential candidates to demonstrate educational technology proficiency at two levels: for a preliminary preparation program and for a professional clear credential. CSUB meets this standard by using the certification system developed by the California Technology Assistance Project Region 8 (CTAP8). All Kern County public schools use this system for professional development in educational technology and often conduct workshops on specified skills.
How you can meet this standard
CTAP8 technology proficiency is demonstrated by compiling an annotated portfolio of artifacts for each skill. Some skills must be demonstrated to a Level III mentor or leader. ED SE 400 is a prerequisite for the secondary credential program and includes Level I certification. CSUB also offers GS 277 in the Winter and Spring quarters to provide Level I certification for both elementary and secondary credential candidates. Beginning in the Fall of 05 LS 290 and 291 will provide CTAP8 Level I certification. Certification trainings are also offered by CTAP8 and at local schools.
ED CI 579 provides an independent study approach for obtaining CTAP8 Level I certification. Students taking this approach to CTAP8 certification are expected to be already thoroughly proficient in the requisite skills and able to assemble a portfolio independently.
No instruction is offered in ED CI 579 and many students have been unable to complete it.
GS 277 or ED SE 400 are the preferred ways to assemble a portfolio.

The only course requirement is to complete a portfolio that demonstrates the sub-skills of the standard by the end of the quarter, March 14. As students complete their portfolios, they can submit them to the instructor. Electronic portfolios are acceptable. TaskStream contains a file structure for assembling a portfolio online. If you buy a TS subscription, email me so I can add you to the class and you can have access to the DRF.
The skills requiring face to face demonstrations can be checked off by any Level III mentor or leader. Resources for assembling the portfolio can be found here.
Please use your RunnerMail account to communicate about course matters if you don't have a TaskStream subscription. When contacting me, put the course abbreviation, number, section and your last name in the Subject box. Communication in other email formats is likely to be missed.
Please note that Level I certification is a prerequisite for ED CI 560, the course that certifies CTAP8 Level II.
