Social Perception, Attitudes, Mental Simulation Lab

The Social Perception, Attitudes, Mental Simulation (SPAMS) lab is directed by social/personality psychologist Chuck Tate and focuses on (a) the perception of social categories [social perception], (b) attitudes toward social categories [attitudes], and (c) prediction and counterfactual thinking [mental simulation]. Specifically, we examine individual differences in how people define social categories (e.g., ‘race,’ gender, sexual orientation) and the implications these definitions have for prejudice, self-concepts, and other aspects of person-perception. We also study the processes underpinning and supporting predictions of future events in social and non-social domains, as well as the interplay between prediction (what might be) and counterfactual thinking (what might have been).
