THEA 351: Lighting Design

This class is an in-depth study of lighting design for the stage.  This is a hands-on class. Upon completion of this course, one should be familiar with the procedure for creation of a lighting design, and be able to create an aesthetic representation of a theatrical lighting design on paper.  Rendering light will be covered as well as paperwork associated with lighting a show.  We will also cover making templates. This is a five-unit course with a mandatory lab section.   Safety procedures will be stressed.

Specific Goals:

1.      To provide the student with a step-by-step approach to creating a lighting design for the stage.

2.      To provide the student with criteria which to make value judgments relating design and electric production.

3.      To provide the student with a specific dramatic vocabulary in order to discuss the lighting design process.

4.      To expose the student to appropriate equipment and procedures involved in producing a realized design.

5.      To spur the creative and imaginative process.
