THTR 241 Stagecraft (Fall 2003)

 

This is a five-unit course with a mandatory lab section.

The class meets in DT 113 M, W, F from 9:30 until 10:55

and also Fridays from 3:30 until 4:55.

 

The text for this course is: Technical Production and Design by J. Michael Gillette, fourth edition.

This course is an overview of the technical elements involved in scenic and lighting aspects of play production. Different stage configurations and machinery is covered as well as safety issues. Upon completion of this course, one should understand the basic tools and materials used for scenic construction, understand basic techniques of construction, be aware of the structure and hierarchy of a scene shop, and be able to read and understand technical drawings. Additionally, one should know the difference between types of lighting instruments, the proper way to hang them and comprehend the fundamentals of electricity.

Attendance is required and roll will be taken. Points will be accrued at the rate of 3 per day. Roll will be taken within the first ten minutes of class. Tardiness of more than ten minutes will be considered an absence and no points will be awarded for that day. Please note that absence from class does not change the due date for or the responsibility of competing assignments.

 The Academic Integrity policy is on page 59 of the old catalogue and 57 of the new one.

All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date specified. Late work is automatically subjected to a 10% penalty and excessively late work may be, at the professor’s discretion, given a zero. Exams will not be rescheduled without appropriate supporting paperwork, (such as medical records showing serious illness or hospitalization). This syllabus is subject to change. There is a separate syllabus for the lab portion of this course. Additional drafting supplies are required.

 

The use of cell phones is strictly prohibited during class time. Turn your phone OFF before class begins!

Additional supplies required for this course are:

30/60/90 triangle, 45/45/90 triangle, Architects scale rule, Drafting Pencils, several large sheets (size D) of paper or velum. This will be discussed further in class.

 

There is a total of 1,000 points possible, 500 points in the lab and 500 in the classroom. Grades will be weighted as follows:

Attendance @ 3 points per day 100
