REQUIREMENTS FOR RESEARCH PAPERS

1. DUE DATES

Topics are due no latter than Wednesday, September 24

Papers are due Friday, October 10

2. LENGTH

Papers must be a minimum of 1,500 words in length.

3. FORMAT

A. You must use proper notation for any material you take directly or indirectly for your research. In other words, if you didn’t make it up, you must cite your source. The required format for this paper is MLA. If you are not familiar with the MLA, you can check out an MLA handbook at the library, visit the writing center, or see me.

B. Margins—no more than one (1) inch at the top, bottom, right, and left.

C. Indent each paragraph five (5) spaces.

D. No extra spaces between paragraphs.

E. Must be typed and doubled-spaced.

F. Paragraphs must have a minimum of three (3) sentences that are grammatically correct. At the same time, I do not want to see fifteen paragraphs that are three sentences long.

G. The paper must begin with a title block that lists the title, your name, my name, the date, and the class name, number, and section.

H. The paper must begin with an introduction followed by the body of the paper and end with a conclusion.

4. GRAMMAR

Each grammatical error will cost you two (2) points for a maximum of ten (10) points. Each spelling error will cost you two (2) points for a maximum of ten (10) points. Hence, if you punctuate incorrectly, forget to underline play titles, end a sentence with a preposition, change tenses, etc., or misspell words, you can lose up to twenty (20) points.

 

5. REQUIREMENTS FOR THE RESEARCH PAPER

A. You must select a topic that deals with an element of technical theatre. Some examples would be: Appia and Craig, wing and drop scenery, robotic lighting, to name a few. This topic MUST BE SUBMITTED FOR MY APPROVAL BY Wednesday, September 24.

B. You must us a MINIMUM of three sources to write your paper, but feel free to use as many sources as necessary to thoroughly cover your topic. You must use sources that are generally available and easy for me to find. If you use sources from the library, please return them so I can grade your papers. I WILL CHECK.

C. Your paper must open with a paragraph that introduces the topic that you are going to be discussing. Also, you must provide a conclusion that ties the entire paper together. It is during this part of the paper that you should state your overall feelings of the topic discussed. Along with your opinions, you must state why you have these opinions.

D. The idea of this paper is for you to research a topic and then tell me IN YOUR OWN WORDS what you learned about that topic. DON’T JUST COPY YOUR RESEARCH. THIS IS KNOWN AS PLAGIARISM AND YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY FAIL THE CLASS IF YOU ARE CAUGHT PLAGIARIZING.

I reserve the right not to grade any papers, which are plagiarized, less than 1,500 words, have fewer than 3 sources, do not have proper notation, or are late, in which case you will receive a zero for the assignment.
