Award Winners and Honors

There is a lot of good work going on for the students working out of Dr. Duran’s Social Lab! Several students have recently received recognition for their research. Amy Grundvig and Kati Rodzon, both McNair scholars, took their research to the conference for Alpha Chi (the national honor society). Amy won first prize for psychological research, and Kati won a scholarship for her work. Jared Chapman, who is a McNair scholar and a Sally Casanova Predoctoral student, won First Place in the Undergraduate, Humanities and Social Sciences division of the CSUB Student Research Competition. He will also be presenting his research at the 7th Annual Stanford Undergraduate Psychology Conference this spring. Mike Butler has recently been chosen as the CSUB nominee for the William Randolph Hearst/CSU Trustees' Award for Outstanding Achievement.

Several of the students from Duran’s lab will also be presenting their research at the Western Psychological Association Conference in May. Amy is presenting two of her research projects: “Attitudes toward Openly and Closeted Gay Males” and “Attitudes and Intended Behaviors toward Women Who Work.” She has also won the Mary J. Allen award for her research, which will be presented at WPA. Kati is presenting her research, “A Measure of Attitudes Held toward Lesbian Women.” Jared is presenting “Effects of Political Beliefs on Opposing Viewpoints: Evidence for a Threat to Core Beliefs” and “Religiosity and a Threat to Core Beliefs: A Survey of Religious Leaders and College Students.” James Cazares, graduate student, will be presenting “Affect and Cognition in Development of Attitudes Stemming from Political Ideology,” and Jordan Rude, graduate student, will be presenting “"Effects of Negative Affect on Information Processing and Intergroup Attitude."

And yet there’s more! Two of our lab students have been accepted to graduate programs. Kati has been accepted to the Master’s program at SFSU, and James has been accepted to the Ph.D. program at Texas Tech. Additionally, James has also been awarded an AT&T Chancellor’s Endowed Fellowship at Texas Tech.
