Background

Dr. Andy Alali earned his Ph.D. in Mass Communications from Howard University; he is currently a Full Professor of Communications at California State Unveristy, Bakersfield. Dr. Alali is an active scholar and is widely published in his field. He has authored and edited/co-edited books such as: Mass Media Coverage of Terrorism: Methods of Diffusion; Mass Media Sex and Adolescent Values: An Annotated Bibliography and Directory of Organizations; Terrorism and the News Media: A Selected Annotated Bibliography; and HIV and AIDS in the Public Schools: A Handbook for Curriculum Development, Teacher Education, and the Placement of Affected Students (with a Directory of Resources). Dr. Alali's research has also been published in scholarly journals such as: Gazette; Omega; The Journal of African Communications; Psychological Reports; Education; College Student Journal; and International Issues. Dr. Alali is co-founder and Editor of The Journal of African Communications.He is the 1994, 1997 and 1998 recipient of the Whitney-Carnegie Awards for Excellence in Research.  He was awarded fellowships by the Council for the Advancement of Scientific Education (CASE) in 2000; the Council for the Advancement of Science Writing, Inc. in 1999; and the Newspaper Association of America in 1999.

Projects

Dr. Alali's current projects are in the areas of health communication, health promotion, and disease prevention campaigns in Africa. The first is a project, "Health Communication: Annotated Sourcebook," for the American Library Association. Second, are two research projects in Southern Africa - an analysis of health warnings and disclosures in South African cigarette ads, and the interpersonal channels used for conversations about health.
