The Learner-Centered Classroom: Building Rapport and Community

The retention research is irrefutable that student success has an affective dimension--that is, student success is definitely tied to how students feel in the classroom and at their institution. Studies done over the last twenty-five years suggest that one of the most crucial factors in helping students complete their degrees involves creating an inclusive atmosphere of community. The literature shows that this affective dimension influences the depth with which students learn our disciplines and their development of critical thinking skills. This program will suggest practical strategies for creating a sense of community within the classroom so that the classroom environment is warm, safe, and inclusive.

Creating and Maintaining a Climate of Civility on Campus

Many faculty members decry a perceived lack of civility on campus. Addressing their concerns requires asking and exploring several fundamental questions. What does "civility" mean? Why is it important? What is the dividing line between legitimate debate and classroom disruption? How are competing claims to academic freedom (by students and faculty members) to be resolved? When does lawful expression turn into prohibited harassment?
