Lab Assignment Due next class
Topic: Continue
Review and developing problem solving skills
--Windows XP Operations: control panels, printers, etc.,
new
functions
in Word from new documentation
The goal this
quarter is to make you a "hacker", a problem solver, capable of
figuring out how to ask and answer
questions about
computers and solve your computer problems. Knowing exactly how to perform every function in programs is
not the goal but vocabulary
is important! Without the appropriate term you cannot
search for an answer.!

available in
the
computer lab, lower level of library, to help if needed. Check
their web page for times. |
Review of terms from GS104a assignments and
the
text. Most you probably know and have in your dictionary.
The terms with an "*" you will be expected to have in your dictionary
and in a quiz be able to define and
give examples
without accessing other sources. Check with a GS104 instructor or
the class assiastant if you need help with these terms. In
addition to
the class and text documentation you can
also check this Glossary
or Google for
help with definitions you may not find.

FYI--We
will be accessing additional
text documentation this quarter. It is structured the same
as
last quarters text documentation, lessons are specific step by step
treatment
of functions. You
will in many if not most cases be able to grasp how
to perform a task without going through the detailed steps but if you
don't understand a task, specifics are clearly presented in the
documentation. The first documents below mostly
specify functions
we have worked with before. You might want to look at the table
of contents for lesson 1-10 and check out those functions you do
not recognize. Mnimally you should know the name and purpose of a
function and
where to find instructions on how to perfom the if needed.
Remember our goal is to
build your skills in problem solving when using your
computer. Knowing how
to perform all possible
tasks in Windows and applications is not very useful or even possible. It
will not be
expected that you can perform all of these
functions from memory but
you definitely
need to know where to find instructions and be able to perform the task
from the instructions.

(2) Assignment: Add the following with the answer to your
"Problems and
Solutions" list. You may/should work with other class
members to
answer these. You will be expected to understand
the answers and be able to perform any of these on the next quiz.
Windows
Problems :
How do I update my virus protection?
How do I update Windows?
How do I install a program?
How do I uninstall a program?
How do I properly eject a flashdrive?
Word Problems:
How do I show or hide tools?
How do I change Word so that a Drawing Canvas
does not appear when I insert an autoshape?
How do I turn off check spelling checking as I
type, (it messes up my thinking and I prefer checking it at the later
How do I set margins for a term paper
How do I sort lists
(3) Dictionary and FAQ: Make sure you have the terms with an
"*" defined and a good example where relevant. You have defined
most of these
terms previously in your dictionary. Improve on previously
defined terms if possible and define new terms in your own words (not
just copy and
pasted from
another source). Your definitions should be clear, complete and
understandable to someone like your
self who is not in this class. Your understanding the
concept is the goal for creating definitions. If you do not
understand a concept ask fellow class members then your instructor if
needed. Add any problems and solutions you think are important
enough to your FAQ.
(4) Review new additions to Computers
and Society Links.
Erase
the previous documents
from your
homework folder (mine would be named
rossjHW). Make a
copy of all homework, in
red above, and place in this
folder on
your computer-be sure and erase old homework from this folder.
You will copy this folder to the class folder on transfer at the
beginning of the next
class.
