The data in pwltsp.por is drawn from the Penn World Table (Mark 5.6). An earlier version of the table (Mark 5) was described in "The Penn World Table (Mark 5): An Expanded Set of International Comparisons, 1950-1988" by Robert Summers and Alan Heston, Quarterly Journal of Economics, May 1991. The Penn World Table is distributed by the National Bureau of Economic Research.
The Penn World Table is the most complete set of international comparisons of basic economic data available. All variables are measured on a "purchasing power parity" basis, which means that differences in price levels in each country have been taken into account. As a result, GDP and its major components are directly comparable across nations.
In the subset of the PWT 5.6 which comprises pwltsp.por, each variable has a 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, and 1990 value. Variable names have the same root in each of the three years followed by 50, 60, 70, 80, or 90, depending on the year. For example, the variable POP50 is country population in 1950, POP60 is country population in 1960, POP70 is country population in 1970, and so on. Country, CODE, and CCODE appear once in the dataset. In the following variable list, every variable except Country, CODE, and CCODE is listed by its root and "xx" to designate the year.
