The data and codebook for this instructional subset were extracted by John L. Korey, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and JeDon Emenhiser, Humboldt State University, from material provided by the Center for Political Studies. The material was downloaded from the National Election Study home page on the world wide web http://www.umich.edu/~nes/ on August 3, 1997. INSTRUCTIONAL SUBSET OF AMERICAN NATIONAL ELECTION STUDY, 1996: PRE- AND POST-ELECTION SURVEYS (ICPSR 6896)
Principle Investigators Steven J. Rosenstone, Donald R. Kinder, and Warren E. Miller
During the winter and early spring of 1997 the National Election Studies staff and ICPSR prepared a comprehensive version of the 1996 American National Election Study. Altogether, 1714 citizens were interviewed in the 9 weeks prior to the November 5, 1996 election. In the weeks following the election, 1534 pre-election respondents were reinterviewed. The 1996 NES data set includes a weight which incorporates sampling, nonresponse and post-stratification factors. The frequencies that appear in this codebook are unweighted.
CODEBOOK INFORMATION
An example of a 1996 codebook (variable) record appears below with some explanatory material. The annotations refer to portions of the codebook record according to the numbers [1] - [9]
Note: If these tables do not line up properly, you may need to adjust your browser settings.

[1] [This is the SPSS variable name used in creating this subset.]
[2] [The names in parenthesis (beginning with "V" followed by a number)
are the names provided by the ICPSR in the SAS and SPSS data definition
files which accompany the raw data and in the original ICPSR codebook
documentation. If the last four digits in the original variable name
are under 0900, this indicates an item from the pre-election survey;
if the last four digits are 0900 or more, this indicates an item from
the post-election survey.]
[3] This describes whether the variable is character or numeric. If a
numeric variable has decimal places, it appears below the variable
type. If a numeric variable has no indication for decimal places,
then there are 0 decimal places.
[4] Missing values, if they appear, identify the codes which are
by default assigned to missing data in the SAS and SPSS data definition
files which accompany the raw ASCII data. In the example above, the
value 9 is considered missing data and is so assigned in the SAS and
SPSS data definition files. If two missing data values appear, the
second will appear preceded by "GE" to designate that codes equal to
or greater than it are missing data.
[5] This is the question text for the administered question; it can
also be, as in this example, a description of the processing or
administration variable. All question text appears above the dashed
line.
[6] Explanatory notes or other material provided by NES may appear
below the dashed line, preceding the code values.
[7] These are the frequency counts for the code values. The frequency
counts are unweighted in 1996.
[8] These are the code values representing response categories used
for the question.
[9] These are the code labels for the numbered response categories (code
values). "DK" is equivalent to "don't know," "NA" represents "not
ascertained" and "INAP" indicates "inappropriate" (not applicable).

Full sample weight
-------------------------------------------------------
This weight compensates for the unequal probabilities of
selection for respondents in different size households and
for different non-response across geographic sample design
categories and between panel and cross-section
respondents. It is post-stratified to the July 1995
Census population projections for age, by sex by Census
region categories (Current Population Reports P25-1111,
Table 4). This is a 6 digit variable with a coded
decimal point and 4 actual decimal places.

Sample Design section of the Appendix to the codebook for
the 1996 study.

[FEELING THERMOMETERS]
I'd like to get your feelings toward some of our
political leaders and other people who are in the news
these days. I'll read the name of a person and I'd like
you to rate that person using something we call the
feeling thermometer.
Ratings between 50 degrees and 100 degrees mean that you
feel favorable and warm toward the person. Ratings
between 0 degrees and 50 degrees mean that you don't
feel favorable toward that person and that you don't
care too much for that person. You would rate the
person at the 50 degree mark if you don't feel
particular warm or cold toward the person.
If we come to a person whose name you don't recognize,
you don't need to rate that person. Just tell me and
we'll move on to the next one.
