What is the Preliminary Mild Moderate (M/M) or Moderate Severe (M/S) Program?
The Preliminary Level (M/M and/or M/S) Program in Special Education was approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing for CSU Bakersfield (CSUB) in 1998.
This program is designed for those who wish to pursue a career in teaching students with Mild/ Moderate, or Moderate/Severe Disabilities. Completing all requirements for the Preliminary Program at CSUB entitles the candidates for the grades k-12 special education preliminary credential based on CSUB’s recommendation to CCTC.
This program is comprised of 48 quarter units of course work in general education and in special education across three phases. Every candidate’s program is individualized to accommodate unique individual needs. Candidates have an option to take either mild/moderate or moderate/severe program.
It is critical to meet with a special education program faculty for academic advising.
Upon completion of the Preliminary Education Specialist Program, candidates are expected to continue with the Professional Clear Credential program and complete it within the maximum of 5 years.
Please Note: CSET scores are valid for five years from the date that you pass the exam. You must apply for your credential within those five years.
Program Overview
The Special Education Program provides exemplary credential and master’s degree programs in Mild/Moderate and Moderate/Severe Disabilities and is accredited by National Council on Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC).
These programs are designed to provide candidates with the knowledge and competencies necessary for earning Special Education credentials or master’s degree either in the Mild/Moderate or Moderate/Severe Disabilities.

Applying to the University
If you are not currently a student at CSUB or if you are a graduating senior, you must apply to the university for admission as a post baccalaureate student.
When completing the application be sure to indicate that your objective is "seeking credential," specify "Special Education." If you will be in Master and Credential, specify "Masters in Special Education."
