Getting Started at CSUB and SOE

Step One: Admission

In order to be admitted into a Credential or Degree program in the School of Education a student must complete the following:

The student must apply to the University and pay admission fees. It is important to be sure to clearly state the area of study (i.e. Multiple Subject Credential, BA in Early Childhood Education or MS: Counseling Psychology) in order to be classified properly in the correct program. This application will require two official (sealed) transcripts from each school the student has attended.

Bakersfield and Antelope Valley: apply online at http://www.csumentor.edu/

Santa Clarita: apply through Extended Education

Each program and/or credential has a specific packet that states the requirements and includes forms which must be returned to the Office of Graduate Studies. These requirements include a specified minimum Grade Point Average (G. P. A.) and paperwork such as recommendations and official scores from appropriate test.

Step Two: Fulfillment of prerequisites and coursework

A student is assigned to a program advisor. The advisor assists the student to develop a plan which determines when to complete all courses and activities. Transfer of coursework from other universities may be acceptable is approved by the advisor and other proper authorities.

Step Three: The Culminating Activity

For a credential, the culminating activity is usually a preset period of teaching in a classroom. Interns teach in their own classroom and student teachers are assigned to a classroom with a cooperating teacher.

A degree culminating activity usually consists of three options for most programs: a thesis, a project, or an examination. The Educational Administration program uses only the examination option. The student and advisor should meet at least two quarters in advance to begin planning.

Step Four: Preparing to Graduate

Applying for Graduation

The Application for Graduation should be filed at least two quarters before the expected date of graduation. Applications are available online at (http://www.csub.edu/Admissions/Graduation/) or may be picked up inside the Admissions and Records office. The student must reapply for graduation each quarter if all work is not completed as expected.

An evaluator at the Admission and Records office will review the student's records to assure that all courses listed have been completed. A report from the evaluator will be sent directly to the student address. If there are questions, the student should contact the Admissions and Records Office directly

Credential program students are reviewed by an evaluator in the School of Education. Students who apply for graduation will be invited to participate in the graduate ceremony of the School of Education. Information materials will be sent to the student, however, it is the student's responsibility to meet all deadlines, such as turning in paperwork, ordering robes, and attending the graduation rehearsal. BBEST students may participate in both the School of Education and the Liberal Studies graduations.
