Educational Administration FAQ's
Q: What is the difference between the "Preliminary Administrative Services Credential" and the "Professional Administrative Services Credential?"
A: The Preliminary Administrative Services Credential is the administrative credential one needs to hold administrative positions in the public schools. The Preliminary Administrative Services Credential Program is commonly called the "lst Tier." When that program is completed one should apply for the "Certificate of Eligibility for the Preliminary Administrative Services Credential." When an administrative position is obtained, one then qualifies for and must obtain a Preliminary Administrative Services Credential. The Professional Administrative Services Credential must be completed within five years of obtaining an administrative position. That program is for those who have an administrative position.
Q: How does one select an advisor?
A: There are three full-time educational administration faculty members. You may select any one of the three.
Professor Bud Burrow (661-654- 2482) teaches courses on school law, the principalship, complex educational organizations, and school-community relations.
Dr. Penny Swenson (661-654-3030) teaches courses on instructional supervision, multi-cultural education, governance and politics, and has a special interest in educational technology.
Dr. Louis Wildman (661-654-3047) teaches courses in human relations, curriculum supervision, personnel, human resources, and instructional leadership.
For more information, see their resumes, accessible through this School of Education web-site.
Q: How does one enter the Educational Administration Program?
A: First, get admitted to the University. Call the Admissions Office (661-664-3036) for more information or go on-line to: http://www.csumentor.com/.
Next, apply for admission to the Educational Administration Program. Call 661-654-3055 or 661-654-3160 for an application packet. Then contact a faculty advisor.
Q: What are the program prerequisites?
A: There are two prerequisites:
- EDCI 516 Foundations of American Education
- EDCI 530 Curriculum Theory and Development
Sometimes previous coursework may be used as a substitute for these prerequisites. For example, a M.A. level 3-unit course in the history or philosophy of education can usually be used as a substitute for "Foundations of American Education."
See your advisor for help determining course equivalency when applying for a substitution.
Q: What is the difference between getting an administrative credential and completing a master's degree?
A: Both require completion of field work (EDAD 693 and 694) and the culminating examination (EDAD 698).
The master's degree requires two additional courses: Educational Statistics (EDRS 680) and Research Design and Analysis (EDRS 681). The master's degree may be completed in as little as nine months. On the other hand, all course work for the master's degree must be completed within seven years. There is no maximum time limit for completion of the Preliminary Administrative Services Credential.
Q: Does CSUB offer an administrative internship program?
A: We have made application to offer an internship program and hope to offer this program, starting in 2002. This will be a cooperative program between a school district and CSUB. Candidates are employed by the school district and have regular paid administrative responsibilities while they complete their credential course work. The Intern Program is the same as the regular program, except that candidates substitute an internship for the two field work classes. See an advisor for more information.

Q: What is "field work?" What is the "culminating exam?"
A: All students, except those in the Internship Program, complete two fieldwork experiences. These administrative experiences involve identifying a real educational administration problem (based upon your course work studies and/or your experience), researching what is known about that problem, and making substantial progress in solving that problem--working with a University faculty member and a practicing administrator.
All students have the choice of completing a thesis, a project, or the culminating examination. The culminating exam includes completing a take-home written examination, an oral examination on the written exam, and a portfolio.
Q: How do I apply for graduation?
A: During the term before you complete the Culminating Examination, Thesis, or Project, apply for graduation in the Graduate Studies in Education office in the School of Education building on the CSUB campus.
