Curriculum and Instruction

The Curriculum and Instruction Program is intended for educators and those interested in education who
are seeking to enhance their skills and understandings of curriculum development, implementation, and
assessment. While most candidates for the Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis on Curriculum and
Instruction are K-12 teachers, there are professional development specialists, community college
instructors, coaches, and others who find the programs useful in their careers also. Degree candidates
work with an advisor to develop programs that will help them meet their professional goals.
Within the C&I Program, there are five core courses (16 units) plus the Culminating Activity (generally 5 units). Many candidates focus within Educational Technology or Field-Based Studies although there is ample opportunity for students to develop an Interdisciplinary plan. Twenty-four units are selected by the candidate in consultation with an advisor. The overall MA program requirement is a minimum of 45 quarter units. A maximum of 12 quarter units may be transferred in from other institutions if they meet specific criteria and have a relationship to the candidate's program.
C&I advisors collaborate with the Literacy and Physical Education and Kineseology (PEAK) Programs to serve students with interests in those areas.
Both the Educational Technology and the Field-based are offered online through the School of Education. Many courses may be taken online by all students who desire that option.
A hallmark of the C&I Program is the emphasis on the individual candidate and his or her goals, professionally and academically.
