Counseling Program Requirements
- Step 1: BA or BS Degree
- Complete a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 3.0 cumulative gpa (on a 4.0 scale) from an
accredited university (or a minimum of 3.0 for all graduate work attempted).
- Step 2: CBEST and Certificate of Clearance, (School Counseling only)
- Obtain a Certificate of Clearance and a CBEST score if you are applying for School Counseling.
(Scores must be reported for admission to the program; passing scores are required prior to
internships). Applications for the CBEST and Certificate of Clearance are available from the
Credentials Office (Education 102; phone 661/654-2110).
- Step 3: Prerequisites
- Successfully complete undergraduate or graduate course in Statistics within 5 years of application
to the program with a grade of "C" or higher. Obtain experience in the field through
volunteer, paraprofessional, or professional work. For example, substitute teaching or other classroom
experience is suggested for School Counselor applicants.
- Step 4: University Application for Graduate Study
- Submit a Graduate Application for Admission through the CSUB Admissions office (Student Services
Building; phone 661/654-3036). Designate Code Number 08261: Education/Counseling/Guidance on Part B.

- Step 5: Counseling Program Application
- Obtain a CSUB Counseling Program Admissions Application, available from the Advanced Education
Department office (Education 238; phone 661/654-3055). AFTER you are formally accepted by the
university for graduate study, submit a completed program application to the Graduate Studies Office
(Education 105; phone 661/654-3160). Admission deadlines are October 15 for Winter Quarter, February 15
for Spring Quarter, and April 15 for Fall Quarter.
- Step 6: Take courses prior to, or concurrent with, program admission
- Graduate students admitted to the university may "sample" the following courses prior to
formal admission by the Educational Counseling Program: EDCS 540 (Introduction to Counseling, Fall,
Spring), EDCS 601 (Substance Abuse, Fall), EDCS 510 (Developmental Counseling, Winter), and EDCS 570
(Career Counseling, Spring). These courses are offered on a space available basis only. Please call the
Advanced Education Department office (661/654-3055) for registration information.
