A Nov. 5 lecture in the Student Union Multipurpose Room will focus on "Medicine in Nazi Ideology and Practice."
The lecture, hosted by the California State University, Bakersfield's Kegley Institute of Ethics, will be given by University of Tennessee, Knoxville professor Dr. Vejas Liulevicius. The lecture is also being sponsored by Kern Medical Center and the Bakersfield College Norman Levin Center for the Humanities.
Liulevicius' work focuses on German relations with Eastern Europe, according to a CSUB news release.
"He's going to be talking about how the world view of Nazi Germany corrupted the way people thought about medicine," said Dr. Christopher Meyers, director of the Kegley Institute.
Liulevicius will also talk about how that relates to the way medicine is practiced in the United States, Meyers said, including things such as experimentation and informed consent.
"We thought it would be great to have him here," Meyers said.
The idea to have Liulevicius speak was driven primarily by Kern Medical Center, he said.
The lecture is free and is open to the public.
According to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville's Web site, Liulevicius has written numerous books including "War on the Eastern Front: Culture, National Identity and German Occupation in World War I" and "The German Myth of the East: 1800 to Present."
The lecture is at 7 p.m. on Nov. 5. Free parking will be available after 6 p.m. that day in Lot K.
The Kegley Institute has hosted many lectures at CSUB. Most recently Dr. Art Kaplan spoke on the Ethics of Healthcare Reform and the current healthcare reform debate.
According to the Kegley Institute's Web site, its next lecture will be in January with Dr. Michael Davis, who will speak on "Taxation and a Duty Toward Ones Community."
"The university's mission is to enhance the intellectual environment both on campus and in the community," Meyers said.
