Black History Month is a time to rejoice and remember the struggles and triumphs of the past.

With Black History Month coming to an end, CSUB’s African American Student Union (AASU) presents its first annual Black History Celebration. It will be held tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Union Multi-Purpose Room.

The celebration will consist of hip-hop music, gospel singing and praise dancing. AASU President Monica McGhee will also speak.

"I’m hoping my speech strikes a cord in the brain," said McGhee. "It will make everyone think about things going on in their lives and what went on in the past."

McGhee said Bradford was chosen as a speaker because he has a great deal of knowledge.

"He went through the struggles during the 60’s and was a history professor, which makes him an expert in black history," she said.

Bradford’s speech is entitled “Why Black History?”

Counselor and AASU Adviser LaShawn Barefield is excited about tonight’s event.

"I’m looking forward to it,” said Barefield. “I hope there’s a good turn out. We’re hoping this will be an annual event.”

Both Barefield and CSUB’s Ombudsman and Co-Adviser of AASU Willis Hill agree the success of the event will depend on the students.

"The students were instrumental in planning the event," said Barefield.

Recently there has been a backlash against diversity and cultural awareness. Some feel holidays such as Black History Month are no longer needed. However, McGee, Barefield and Hill feel Black History Month is necessary.

"Black History Month helps African Americans reflect and remember all the contributions and struggles done by other African Americans to bring us where we’re at today," said McGee.

Hill said the holidays such as Black History Month are needed because certain cultures don’t know their culture’s history.

"These type of holidays will be needed until all cultures’ history is represented and taught," said Hill.

This event is free and will be accompanied by refreshments.
