PD/PI: Dr. Yiannis Ampatzidis, Assistant Professor, CSUB
Co-PD: Dr. Saeed Jafarzadeh, Assistant Professor, CSUB

Goals

The main goal of this proposal is to develop innovative experiential learning, research and extension opportunities for underrepresented students, in biosystems and agricultural engineering (BAE) concentration.

Purpose: Broadening the student body in agricultural engineering emphasis at CSUB; increase the number of Hispanic and underrepresented students in the agricultural engineering emphasis.

Outcomes/Products/Results:

  1. provide applied research and experimental learning activities to students (15 students per year). Students will participate in undergraduate research projects at CSUB, UCCE, USDA agencies and industry internships, and in summer research experiences;
  2. Faculty will enhance their teaching skills and research experience with developmental opportunities;
  3. A scholarship will be provided to one student;
  4. Students and faculty will present their research projects to university clubs;
  5. Develop a mentoring plan for faculty and students;
  6. Outreach efforts will reach 19 local high schools and 3 local community colleges to conduct orientation events to interested students of the new biological and agricultural engineering concentration.

Objectives

  • Increase student enrollment (by 30% every year). The freshman enrollment in the emphasis will grow by a minimum of 50% per year
  • Increase of Hispanic and underrepresented students in the agricultural engineering emphasis (60% by the end of fourth year)
  • Increase female enrollment (by 40% at the end of fourth year). The female students will form at least 40% of the student body of the emphasis by the end of the proposed project.
