Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies
Honor Society Information
APPLICATION DEADLINES
Liberal Studies offers a broad-based, interdisciplinary major for students interested in careers in elementary school teaching or in fields unserved by traditional departmental majors.
Credential Track
The credential track Liberal Studies degree is the approved major for entrance into the Preliminary Credential Program and is designed to provide the educational experience best suited for the prospective elementary teacher.
Non-Credential Track
The general Liberal Studies track is offered for students interested in the broad liberal arts experience, but not in obtaining a teaching credential. For the non-credential major, the program can be a unique blend of courses specific to your educational needs. Whether one plans to open a business or to work in the public sector, the Liberal Studies major can provide the necessary knowledge for personal and professional development.
Requirements for the Major in Liberal Studies
Credential and Non-Credential Tracks
Students wishing to complete the approved multiple subjects waiver major must complete the requirements within each of the following AREAS. These requirements can be satisfied with CSUB courses, transfer courses or, as appropriate, waiver examinations. A course used to satisfy one requirement cannot be used to satisfy a second requirement in a different area or be counted as part of the Upper Division Concentration.
The credential-track major in Liberal Studies, approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC), satisfies all of the following University requirements:
- General Education
- Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement
- Women/Ethnic Studies
- American Institutions
- Courses for CLAD
- Multiple Subject Credential Program prerequisites
- As directed by CTC, all multiple subjects credential programs must now prepare students for work in classrooms that are cross-cultural (CLAD stands for Cross-Cultural, Language and Academic Development) or bilingual (BCLAD stands for Bilingual, Cross-Cultural, Language and Academic Development).
- To give students the foundation for a multiple subjects credential program, the credential-track major in Liberal Studies includes appropriate courses in culture, minority culture, foreign language and cross-cultural and bilingual education:
- Area One: Language
- Area Two: Mathematics
- Area Three: Sciences
- Area Four: Social Sciences
- Area Five: Humanities
- Area Six: Visual and Performing Arts
- Area Seven: Health and Physical Education
- Area Eight: Human Development
- Area Nine: Ethnic, Gender, Cultural and Handicapped Perspectives
- Area Ten: Technology
- Area Eleven: Cross-Cultural Studies
- Area Twelve: Field Experience
- Area Thirteen: Subject Matter Competency
- Area Fourteen: Concentration
- The concentration requires the completion of four related courses, one of which is senior seminar. The minimum number of units required in a concentration is 19 quarter units. No course used to meet one of the requirements above may be double counted in a concentration. Upper division courses taken at other institutions may be substituted but only with the approval of the advisor and the program coordinator. Courses selected for the concentration may be used to meet requirements for a Supplementary Authorization.
- The Liberal Studies program, as described above, will be modified for those students transferring to CSUB in Fall 2003 or who come under the 2001-2003 catalog rights. Those modifications will include the elimination the non-Western culture and the addition of additional upper-division Math and Science requirements. For more information, consult with an advisor during a regularly scheduled advising session in Santa Clarita.
