New ASI President Carlos Ortiz

At 21 years old he already is a certified mortgage banker and holds a California real estate license. Carlos Ortiz, CSUB's ambitious president of the Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is still pushing himself to achieve more. "I come from a long line of entrepreneurs," he explained. His family owns Liberty One Real Estate and HRM Farm Labor Contracting. "I plan to follow in my family's footsteps by attending law school focusing in the field of corporate law," he said.

The sophomore is originally from the "large city of Wasco," he joked and attended Garces Memorial High School.

He's been active in student government for many years. While in high school he served as Associated Student Body representative both his freshman and sophomore years and treasurer his junior year.

"Being ASI president, it has already helped me refine my leadership abilities," he detailed. "It helps me filter news and various information back to the students of CSUB. I feel my role as ASI president will allow me to raise questions that are important to the CSUB students and show the community that CSUB is their school also.

"More than ever with the California budget crisis it is important for the students of CSUB to stay informed of those measures taken by CSSA (California State Student Association) to fight against the CSU budget cuts.

"In addition, in an effort to enhance student life ASI is looking to bring various programs and activities to campus this school year. It will be important to get feedback from all the students at CSUB on events they would like to see take effect."

Ortiz said he has no spare time these days but enjoys watching movies when he gets a chance.

For now he's focused on completing his bachelor's degree in economics at CSUB.
