The Department welcomes new faculty members Senem Saner and Adam Scarfe, who will join the Department in the Fall. 

Adam Scarfe received a PhD. from the University of Ottawa in 2001, with a dissertation entitled On the Nature and Function of Speculative Philosophy: A Study of Hegel’s Logic and Whitehead’s Process and Reality.  He also received an M.A. in Education in 2005 from the Department of Educational Foundations, University of Saskatchewan, with a thesis entitled On Selectivity in Learning and Teaching: The Role and Limits of ‘Negative Prehensions’ in Alfred North Whitehead’s Philosophy of Education.  Has published 5 articles in area of Whitehead and Philosophy of Teaching and learning, three articles on Whitehead and process thought, and papers on Whitehead and Heidegger, Whitehead and Buddhism, and on Hegel in the Journal of Speculative Philosophy.

Senem Saner is a PhD candidate at Stony Brook University and expects to defend her dissertation, The Dialectic of Indifference and the Process of Self-Determination in Hegel’s Logic and the Philosophy of Right, in the Fall. She received her M.A. in Philosophy from Purdue University.  She has taught a number of courses, including Introduction to Philosophy, Logical and Critical Reasoning, Symbolic Logic, Moral Reasoning, and Politics and Society, and has two published articles in Studies in Practical Philosophy.

Congratulations to RS major Mona Twocats, who has been selected as Recipient of the 2006-2007 Dr. Gary and Katy Kessler Scholarship, which is awarded each year to a graduating senior in the Religious Studies and/or Philosophy Programs.  Congratulations, Mona.  We’re very proud of you!

Congratulations to RS and Philosophy major Cecilia Barnes, who is the 2006 NCAA Division II National Champion in the Women’s Discuss and Hammer Throw (and fourth in the shot put!). Unbelievable performances, Cecilia. You make us very proud!

Application Deadline for Dr. Gary and Katy Kessler Scholarship, May 26th.  The Kessler Scholarship was established in 2005 by Dr. Gary Kessler, CSUB Professor Emeritus and founding faculty in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, and Katy Kessler, CSUB alumnus of 1991 and long time Administrative Assistant to the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. This scholarship awards $300 in the Fall term to a graduating senior in the Religious Studies and/or Philosophy Programs. Selection criteria include academic excellence, and priority will be given to students pursuing a joint degree in Religious Studies and Philosophy and to those with special interest in multicultural studies.  Click here for more information.

Congratulations to RS major Mona Twocats, who has been named a NcNair Scholar. Mona has also recently been asked to deliver a paper on "Ritual, Mysticim, and Postmodernity" at the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion's Annual Meeting in Portland, Oregon. Way to go!

Congratulations to Dr. Jackie Kegley, who was awarded the Herbert W. Schneider award from the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy.  Great work, Jackie! We’re very proud of you.

Congratulations to Cecilia Barnes, double major in Philosophy and Religious Studies, who won the Division II National Championship in the Women’s Weight Throw at last week’s Women’s Indoor National Track and Field Championships in Boston, MA. Wonderful work, Cecilia! That is a significant accomplishment indeed!

Congratulations to Dr. Tim Vivian, whose new book, Words to Live By: Journeys in Ancient and Modern Egyptian Monasticism, has been released by Cistercian Publications.  Great work!

The Second Annual CSUB Undergraduate Philosophy/Religious Studies Conference will be held April 8th.  Deadline for submissions is February 20th.

Sister Helen Prejean to present the 20th Anniversary Charles W. Kegley Memorial Lecture, April 18th: Dead Man Walking: Reflections on the Value of Life. A panel has been set for the following evening, April 19th, to present local opinion on the morality of the death penalty.  Get more details here.

Kegley Institute of Ethics sponsors First Annual “Best Ethics Paper” Contest for high school students.

Congratulations to Jared Chapman! Jared is this year’s recipient of the Dr. Gary and Katy Kessler Scholarship.  This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding senior majoring in Religious Studies and/or Philosophy.  We are very proud of you, Jared!

Philosophy Course Level Changes.  Beginning in Fall 2006, the following ten courses will change from
300-level to 400-level:

  • PHIL 406 (formerly PHIL 306), Contemporary Issues in Philosophy
  • PHIL 411, (formerly PHIL 311), Marx, Marxism, Post-Marxism
  • PHIL 431 (formerly PHIL 331), Aesthetics
  • PHIL 432 (formerly PHIL 332), Theories of Ethics
  • PHIL 435 (formerly PHIL 335), Philosophy of Law
  • PHIL 440 (formerly PHIL 340), Metaphysics
  • PHIL 431 (formerly PHIL 341), Self and Mind
  • PHIL 451 (formerly PHIL 351), Theories of Knowledge
  • PHIL 452 (formerly PHIL 352), Philosophy of Science
  • PHIL 455 (formerly PHIL 355), Philosophy of Language

These changes signal that the courses are targeted for philosophy majors, are not available for general education credit, and involve coursework that is reserved exclusively for upper division and post-baccalaureate
students.

Financial Aid HighlightsFinancial Aid Highlights is a periodic electronic news update provided by the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships for the benefit of prospective and continuing CSUB students and parents, high school and community college counselors, faculty, and staff. The electronic publication will contain informational items pertaining to financial aid and scholarships of relevance to the CSUB community. Congratulations to Dr. Debra Jackson! Emory Law School's Feminism and Legal Theory Project has accepted Dr. Debra Jackson to their Visiting Scholar Program for 3 weeks in December and 3 weeks next summer.  During her residency she plans to research the gendering of standards of reasonableness in rape law in determining culpability and she will make a presentation to the Emory community during her second visit. Congratulations, Debra!  That’s great news!

Alumni Update! Religious Studies Alum John Pinheiro (1992) makes history (literally) and meets President Bush! John is now Assistant Professor of History at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI.  Keep up all the good work, John. We’re very proud of you!

A lecture by former Iraqi Ambassador Joseph Wilson, “The Ethics of Washington Politics,” will be the first of a series of events to mark the Twentieth Anniversary of the Kegley Institute of Ethics.  Ambassador Wilson will be speaking on October 20th, 7pm, in the Dore Theatre.  Click here for more details.

Philosophers’ Café.  Meet other local people to discuss fundamental issues.  Philosophers’ Cafe meets on the last Friday of every month, from 12:00-1:30pm, at Russo’s Books Marketplace, 9000 Ming Ave. The next meeting will take place on September 30th, and the issue to be discussed is, “What are our obligations to help the poor?”.

Welcome Back! A hearty “Welcome Back!” to all of our students and staff. We’re all looking forward to a fun and productive year. On tap for the year are some great course offerings, a series of events to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Kegley Institute of Ethics, the Second Annual CSUB Undergraduate Philosophy and Religious Studies Conference, a special visit and lectures by Hilary and Ruth Anna Putnam, some special events sponsored by the Philosophy and Religious Studies Club, and more. We are looking forward to seeing all of you at all of these upcoming events!

Congratulations to Tim Vivian! The St. Shenoute the Archimandrite Coptic Society has named Tim Vivian its recipient of the Society's Annual Award for his significant contributions to the St. Shenoute Conference of Coptic Studies and to Coptic and Monastic Studies. Tim received the award for his paper "'Those Whom God Made Famous throughout the World': Holy Men from Middle and Lower Egypt in the Writings of Saint Shenoute the Great," Coptica 4 (2005): 75-85.  Congratulations, Tim!
