May 24, 2013 - CSUB, Students for Sustainability and Associated Students Inc. (ASI) invite students, staff, faculty and the community to the culmination of CSUB's third appearance in the annual Recyclemania competition, and to stay for the student club food sales fundraiser.
The event, being held Tuesday, May 28th at 12pm in front of the Student Union, will feature music, food, and a display of the campus's first ever-solar powered bike donated by WZI Incorporated, a local engineering firm that built and designed the bike out of solar materials for the Students for Sustainability club at CSUB to use in order to collect recyclable trash around campus. In honor of May being bike awareness month, the Roadrunner Solar Bicycle will be displayed in front of the Student Union for the duration of the event.
"The Roadrunner Solar Bicycle is an element essential to continuing campus sustainability efforts," says transportation consultant Zachary Griffin. "Once students see the bicycle around campus, they will be more prone to live sustainably and participate in campus efforts to better the environment."
Recyclemania and the Roadrunner Solar Bicycle are just some of the ways that CSUB has made an effort to become more environmentally friendly. Each year, the campus competes against more than 600 other colleges and universities in the nation wide Recyclemania competition. From February 3rd to April 5th, colleges across the country made pledges to become sustainable and in turn, implement campus wide recycling efforts. In just its third year of participating, CSUB has collected approximately 15,000 pounds of recycled goods including e-waste. That's a whopping 25 metric tons of carbon dioxide, or the removal of the emissions of five cars from our air.
Students and the community can contribute year round to recycling efforts by disposing of recyclable materials properly in designated receptacles located on the CSUB campus and throughout the Bakersfield community.
