September 24, 2013 - Clarence Major-a highly distinguished African-American poet, novelist, and painter-will give a poetry reading in the California Writers Series on the CSUB campus on Wednesday, October 2nd at 7 p.m., in the Dezember Room of the Walter Stiern Library.
Professor Emeritus of English at UC Davis, Major has published more than ten books of poetry, including Symptoms and Madness (1971), Private Line (1971), The Cotton Club (1971), The Syncopated Cakewalk (1974), Inside Diameter: The France Poems (1985), Surfaces and Masks (1988), Some Observations of a Strange at Zuni, etc. (1989), Parking Lots (1992), Configurations: New and Selected Poems, 1958-1998 (1999), which was a National Book Award finalist, Waiting for Sweet Betty (2002), Myself Painting (2008), and his newest book of poems, Down and Up, just published this fall.
His novels include All-Night Visitors (1969), No (1973), Reflex and Bone Structure (1975), Emergency Exit (1979), Such Was the Season (1987)), My Amputations (1986), which won the Western States Book Award, Dirty Bird Blues (1996), and One Flesh (2003). He has also published several collections of short fiction and edited two dictionaries of African-American slang. Major has won Pushcart Prizes for both his poetry and his fiction. His paintings have been exhibited in solo and group shows in Massachusetts and Indiana.
The California Writers Series, founded in 2006, is sponsored by Poets & Writers, Dr. Nancy Edwards, the School of Arts and Humanities, the CSUB English Department, Sigma Tau Delta, and the English Honors Society. Previous readers have included Pulitzer Prize winning poets Kay Ryan and Rae Armantrout, and New York Times best-selling novelists Pam Houston, Mona Simpson, and Tatjana Soli.
