The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS)


What is the TEAS?

It is a multiple-choice exam that covers the following material:

  • Reading – paragraph comprehension, passage comprehension, and inferences/conclusions (40 items, 50 minutes)
  • Math – whole numbers, metric conversions, fractions, decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, and ratio/proportion (45 items, 56 minutes)
  • Science – science reasoning, science knowledge, biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, basic physical principles, and general science (30 items, 38 minutes)
  • English and Language Usage – punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling (55 items, 65 minutes)

How will the TEAS be used as an admission criterion?

Students applying to CSUB’s fall 2012 nursing program and all future entry quarters must submit results from TEAS V (or 5.0) by the date specified on the nursing application. No other versions of TEAS will be accepted. As well, students applying to CSUB’s traditional nursing program must have TEAS adjusted individual total score of 70 % or better. However, higher test scores will be rewarded with more points in the primary criteria. Can I take the TEAS more than once?

Yes. CSUB does not restrict the number of times a student takes the TEAS. However, students may not retake the exam within 40 days of the last attempt at CSUB. The highest score is accepted by the department of nursing.

How do I register for the TEAS?

What do I need to bring to take the TEAS?

Students should bring a pencil, a photo ID, and credit card. Anyone without a proper ID or credit card will not be allowed to test. Calculators are not permitted.

How long will it take for me to get my TEAS scores?

Students testing at CSUB will receive their scores immediately after the examination.
