Undergraduate Nursing Student Handbook

This Undergraduate Nursing Handbook is intended to ensure that all students are provided with basic information specific to the Nursing program. The General Catalog of California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) contains rules and policies for the University. The Department of Nursing offers a baccalaureate program built upon a foundation of science and liberal education which prepares graduates as professional nurses for positions in hospital, home, and community agencies.

All students are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and receive certification as public health nurses in the State of California upon graduation. This program also prepares students for entrance into graduate programs in Nursing.

The program is approved by the California Board of Nursing, and accredited by the Commission for Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).

The philosophy of Nursing and baccalaureate program objectives provide the foundation for the undergraduate curriculum. In addition to the Philosophy of Nursing, the Department of Nursing has a Philosophy of the Teaching-Learning Process and Professional Education which takes into consideration individual differences of students, including their cultural and ethnic backgrounds. This philosophy is consistent with the Mission Statement of the University.

The University's Mission Statement emphasizes the importance of cultural diversity and the provision of strong academic support systems which directly affect student access, retention, and productivity. The philosophy, purpose, goals and objectives of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program, guide the curriculum.
