Three of the CSUB Nursing sophomores were elected to CNSA
State Board of Director positions at the convention in Riverside March 1 and
2. They are:
Jenny Strode, Legislative Director (among other
things, she will be presenting the resolution supporting males in nursing,
adopted by the CNSA house of delegates, to the NSNA house of delegates in
Phoenix in April).
Kelly Beyah, Break Through to Nursing Director (she
sits on the ROSA committee as the sophomore rep., which increased her
interest in submitting for this board position).
Jessica Prather, Internet/Website Director (2003 saw
the birth of the CNSA website designed and built by Brent Peterson from
Riverside, who will be mentoring Jessica as she continues to maintain and
improve the site...she already maintains two websites in her current job).
They assumed office at a luncheon and board meeting on
Sunday, following close of the convention, and will continue in their
current positions through the next CNSA state convention in February 2004.
These young women were extremely poised and
professional in their campaigns, speeches, presentations to the house of
delegates, and all-around representation of CSUB. They really put
Bakersfield front and center at the convention, in the best possible way!

FACT
CSUB's Facility for Animal Care and
Treatment owl cages are in desperate need of repair. FACT director,
David Germano said he hopes to initiate a fundraising campaign to update the
cages which house some 50 rehabilitating birds. "We currently
have cages that were built out of wood about 20 years ago and are now
decaying." Germano said. "We would like to have a
state-of-the-art setup that will be better for the rehabilitating
birds." Each year, FACT treats about 400 birds and has returned
more than 20,000 raptors back to their natural habitat. Anyone
interested in helping with a fundraising campaign for the FACT owl cages or
interested in more information about FACT is encouraged to contact Dr.
Germano at (661) 664-2471 or FACT coordinator, Marlene Benton at (661)

CSUB Physics Professor Honored
California State University, Bakersfield
physics professor, Vladimir Gasparyan, was selected as one of seven scholars
for one of the most respected academic institutes in the world.
The Institute for Theoretical Physics on
the University of California, Santa Barbara campus selected Gasparyan as one
of its visiting researchers for 2002-2004. "It's an open
competition for physicists from all universities in the United States.
I am deeply honored to have been selected by ITP," Gasparyan
said. "It will give me a nice opportunity to collaborate and
establish scientific relations with well-known physicists from ITP."
The purpose of the program is to support
the research efforts of faculty at American colleges and universities that
are not major research institutions. Each ITP scholar receives funds
for three round trips and up to six weeks of local expenses to be used over
a period of three years, he said.
Gasparyan, a theoretical physicist, has
been at CSUB since the fall of 2000. He is a native of Armenia, and
earned his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees from Yerevan State
University. Yerevan is the capital of Armenia. This article is

Emma Sims nursing scholarship
endowment
Emma Sims is a retired nurse and has been
a long-time supporter of California State University, Bakersfield. She
has been a loyal donor to the Presiden't Associates and fine arts programs,
the nursing department and others. She attends many university events
and celebrations.
In discussing Sims' most recent gift of
$10,000 with nursing department chair Candace Meares, Meares suggested it
would be fitting to honor Sims for her loyalty to CSUB and the nursing
profession with an endowed scholarship bearing her name. In November,
Sims agreed and the endowment was established. Sims' primary goal is
to ensure more students are trained as nurses to help alleviate the current
nursing shortage. This article is from Cal State Today, Winter 2003.
