| If you are planning to study science,
engineering, or mathematics at Bakersfield College or California State
University, Bakersfield, you may benefit from the Alliance for Minority
Participation (AMP) Program. It includes a four-week long paid summer
workshop and two successive academic years of full-time study with
concurrent academic year workshops. The stipend for the summer workshop is $550 and a graphing calculator. An additional stipend of up to $900 is paid as incentive awards for successfully completing mathematics, biology, chemistry, computer science, or physics classes and enrolling in the corresponding academic-year workshops. The summer workshop will emphasize mathematics allowing you to brush up on the math you have already learned and prepare you for the math and science courses you will be taking in college. If you show satisfactory academic progress in your first two years, you will be eligible to participate in paid summer research projects and internships during your junior and senior years. To be selected (a) your ethnicity must be one of the following: Hispanic-American, African-American, American-Indian or Pacific Islander; (b) you must be ready for pre-calculus or calculus courses and have taken the English Placement and Entry Level Mathematics tests (or received waivers) if you plan to attend CSUB. If you have not taken these tests yet, they will be administered several times during the Spring Quarter 2003 at the CSUB campus. Information about these and the Calculus Readiness Test is included in this package. See also the enclosed brochure about AMP. The dates of this year's summer workshop are June 30 to July 25, 2003. Note that the AMP program is organized in conjunction with and with the assistance of Summer Bridge, Career Beginnings, and possibly other programs as well. If you have been accepted in one of these programs you will still participate in their activities but in addition you will benefit from the AMP program. Please submit the enclosed application as soon as you can. Notification as to your acceptance will be mailed to you by June 21, 2003 or earlier. If you need more information, please feel free to call me at (661) 664-2031 or email me at jtrigos@csub.edu. I hope to see you this summer, ![]() Dr. Javier Trigos Professor of Mathematics AMP Coordinator |
