CSUB’s ‘15 to Finish’ Campaign Continues to Gain Momentum

California State University, Bakersfield continues to gain momentum through the “15 to Finish” campaign encouraging students to graduate in a timely manner.

"The '15 to Finish' campaign continues to be one the of the most successful programs toward increasing CSUB’s graduation rates,” said CSUB Associate Vice President for Enrollment Management Jacqueline Mimms. “Through the campaign, more than 1,500 students have signed the pledge and made the commitment to take 15 units per semester or 30 units per year to ensure graduating in a timely manner. CSUB is well on its way toward meeting our student success targets.”

“Going into the second year of the 15 to Finish campaign, we continue to see an increased awareness on campus regarding on-time graduation,” said Jennifer McCune, CSUB interim registrar and chair of the 15 to Finish Committee. 15 to Finish is designed to raise awareness, encourage participation, motivate students through completion of their degree, and to celebrate students’ successes.”

In coordination with block scheduling, efforts from the 15 to Finish campaign kickoff last year helped raise the average number of units that freshmen were taking from 13.6 in 2016-17 to 14.7 in the 2017-2018 school year, with the Fall 2018 class carrying an average unit load of 15.06. Under block scheduling, incoming students are assigned their first-term course schedule rather than allowing students to self-schedule.

While each student is on his or her own course, the “15 to Finish” campaign helps hold students accountable by asking them to make a pledge to themselves. Students commit to moving steadily toward graduation in four years as freshmen or in two years as transfer students.

To date, CSUB has received more than 1,500 commitments from current students willing to commit to complete and stay on track through the support and resources provided by the “15 to Finish” campaign.

In Spring 2018, more than 600 “15 to Finish” commencement recognition cords were distributed to students who had completed their degree within a 2-year (transfer) or 4-year (freshmen) term since starting at CSUB.

“15 to Finish” is a nationwide campaign that falls in line within CSUB’s goals for student success. It also aligns with the California State University system’s Graduation Initiative 2025 to increase graduation rates for all CSU students while eliminating opportunity and achievement gaps.

They also should seek advice from their advisors through the remainder of their time at CSUB to ensure they are making progress on their degree roadmap: https://www.csub.edu/academicprograms/roadmaps/.
