CSUB Starts 2018-19 Academic Year with New President, Record Enrollment

California State University, Bakersfield will begin the 2018-19 academic year on Monday, Aug. 27, with a new president and record enrollment.

Dr. Lynnette Zelezny, CSUB’s fifth permanent president and first woman to serve in that role, took the helm at the University on July 1, 2018. CSUB also will start the academic year with its largest enrollment ever at the main Bakersfield campus and CSUB Antelope Valley 10,814 students including more than 2,000 new students.

“The beginning of the school year is always such an exciting time for faculty, staff, students and the Bakersfield community. The anticipation of new and wonderful things happening is magnified this year with the addition of a new president, Dr. Lynnette Zelezny, said CSUB Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Thomas Wallace.

The start of the academic year will feature a number of activities on Saturday and Sunday leading to the opening of classes on Monday.

Saturday’s events include:

  • 8-11 a.m. -- Move-in day for students living on campus

  • 11 a.m.- Noon – Roadrunner Parent’s Association Seminar

  • Noon 2 p.m. – Roadrunner Parent’s Association “Family Day” Luncheon and Resource Fair

  • 5:30-8 pm. – “Getting to Know You” cookout

    Sunday’s activities are highlighted by the New Student Convocation and Pinning Ceremony at the Icardo Center from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The New Student Convocation is a formal ceremony for incoming CSUB students (freshmen and transfer students) and their families. This academic tradition is hosted by President Zelezny, faculty, staff and student leaders.

Throughout the first week of classes, Campus Programming will host many Week of Welcome activities, including Rec Fest at the Student Recreation Center Monday from 5-7 p.m. and the Rowdy Run at the Main Soccer Field at halftime of the men’s soccer game against Pacific on Monday. The game begins at 7 p.m.

Other activities during the week will include free food for students, Wellness Wednesday and National College Colors Day on Friday.
