CSUB Named as a 2017 Champion for Higher Education

California State University, Bakersfield has been recognized by The Campaign for College Opportunity as a “2017 Champion for Higher Education” for excelling at enrolling and graduating Associate Degree for Transfer earners. CSUB is one of four California State University and nine California Community Colleges campuses to receive the honor.

The Campaign for College Opportunity recognized CSUB for demonstrating the highest percentage growth in Associate Degrees for Transfer enrollment. CSUB enrolled 236 Associate Degrees for Transfer in 2016-17, an increase of 808% (210 additional ADT earners) from the previous year. CSUB had 1,014 transfer students enrolled in fall 2016.

“Transfer should not be a maze. This year’s honorees are stellar examples of what can be done when leaders work together. Our honorees have redefined what is possible and as a result, have helped thousands of students transfer and reach their educational goals,” said Michele Siqueiros, president of the Campaign for College Opportunity.

The majority of California students who go to college attend community college with the majority of them hoping to transfer to a four-year University. In 2010, the Campaign sponsored historic transfer reform legislation that created a clearer path for students to earn an associate degree and earn a guaranteed admission to the CSU system. Since then, more than 69,000 students have earned an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) and of those that enrolled in the CSU, they have earned their bachelor’s degree almost twice as fast as other transfer students.

CSUB was recognized at the second annual Champions of Higher Education Celebration on Tuesday, Dec. 5, in Los Angeles.
