CSUB Department of Teacher Education’s Kern Rural Teacher Residency Offers Professional Learning for Local Educators

The Department of Teacher Education’s Kern Rural Teacher Residency Program at California State University, Bakersfield is offering a free day of professional learning beginning on October 28 at 8 a.m. in the Student Union Multipurpose Room. All Kern County educators and those interested in becoming educators are welcome to attend.

The professional development day will focus on transformational literacy. There will be keynote speakers and breakout sessions throughout the event provided by educators from Panama-Buena Vista School District, Bakersfield City School District, Greenfield Union School District and CSU Bakersfield.

Session presenters will be engaging participants in learning about the following topics:

  • Social-Emotional and Ethical Literacy: Research and Strategies, presented by Dr. Michael Burroughs (CSUB).
  • Gettin’ Techie with ELA, presented by Sarah Camp (Panama-Buena Vista Union School District).
  • Literacy in a Flat World, presented by Rayshell Fambrough (Bakersfield City School District).
  • Transformation Through the Three Tiers, presented by David Rock (Bakersfield City School District).
  • Transformation Through the Three Tiers, presented by Hana Suleiman (Greenfield Union School District).

The Kern Rural Teacher Residency is dedicated to excellence in preparing educators with the cultural competency and connection to community to make a significant impact in rural settings. This program provides high-quality professional development in a variety of areas. Each of the professional learning events in the series has an educational theme or focus, while simultaneously integrating elements of the Common Core State Standards, Next Generation Science Standards and literacy across disciplines.
