CSUB Moves into Top 10 in National Rankings For Master’s Degree Programs

California State University, Bakersfield has moved into the top 10 universities in the United States for master’s degree programs, according to the latest national ranking by Washington Monthly, a D.C-based magazine.  CSUB moved up two spots from last year’s ranking and has risen significantly from its number 87 ranking in 2015.

In addition, Washington Monthly ranked CSUB number 4 for the Best Bang for the Buck for Western Colleges, a listing of schools that help non-wealthy students attain marketable degrees at affordable prices.  CSUB trails only the University of Washington-Tacoma, CSU Stanislaus and California Maritime Academy in the Best Bank for the Buck for Western Colleges rankings.

“These honors are the latest recognition of the difference the University is making in transforming the lives of our students,” President Horace Mitchell said.  “This national recognition is a tribute to the passion and commitment of our faculty, staff, and administrators to excellence and the success of our students.”

Washington Monthly rates schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories:  social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research, and service.  Unlike other rankings, Washington Monthly’s rankings measure “what colleges can do for their country.”

Earlier this year, California State University, Bakersfield ranked number 3 in the country for the upward mobility of its students from the bottom fifth of income distribution to the top three-fifths.  According to the study, 81 percent of CSUB students who enrolled in the late 1990s moved from the bottom fifth of the income distribution to the top three-fifths.  Only New Jersey Institute of Technology (85 percent) and Pace University (82 percent) ranked above CSU Bakersfield in that category.

CSUB offers graduate degrees and programs in 21 areas, including a Doctorate in Educational Leadership (Ed.D). More information on CSUB master’s degree programs is available at here.
