New Student Convocation Weekend Welcomes CSUB Students

California State University, Bakersfield is preparing for a productive and engaging 2017-18 academic year, starting with New Student Convocation Weekend on Saturday, August 26, and Sunday, August 27.

The weekend will welcome first-time freshmen, transfer students, and their families to University life and provide information on the resources available to them on campus.

On Saturday, students will be able to move into and get settled in their rooms in Student Housing East beginning at 8 a.m., while parents can attend seminars, where they will receive necessary information about their student’s education and experience at CSUB at the Roadrunner Parent’s Association Seminar.

The Roadrunner Parent’s Association “Family Day” Luncheon and Resource Fair also will be held that afternoon, followed by a “Getting to Know You” cookout later in the evening. Other activities will include a midnight breakfast and a Wellness Service and brunch.

On Sunday afternoon, the New Student Convocation and Pinning Ceremony, the main event of the weekend, will take place at 2 p.m. in the Icardo Center. The ceremony will include incoming CSUB students, both freshmen and transfers, and their families. While commencement celebrates the accomplishment and completion of a student’s academic journey, Convocation commemorates the beginning of that journey.

“New Student Convocation gives parents and students an opportunity to interact with faculty, staff, students and alumni at CSUB.  It is a great way to kick-off the new school year, and it also gives new students a roadmap to success,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Thomas Wallace.

The fun doesn’t stop when the weekend ends, as the Week of Welcome (WOW) officially begins on Monday, August 28. Activities planned for the week include:

  • Rec Fest at the Student Rec Center at 6 p.m. Monday.
  • A clubs and organizations social at the Student Union Multipurpose Room at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
  • The Rowdy Run at the women’s soccer game at 7 p.m. Thursday.  Freshmen will join University leaders for a fun run on the field during halftime of the game.

“New student convocation weekend was organized with only one thing in mind -- to integrate new students and their families into the Roadrunner family,” said Director of Campus Programming Emily Poole. “WOW brings together new and returning students with fun, interactive and informative programs to prepare them for a great semester!”
