CSUB Students Receive ‘George Award’ for Art Projects

California State University, Bakersfield’s School of Arts and Humanities has selected seniors Wilfredo Bravo and Julissa Cardenas as co-recipients of this year’s George Award, created in honor of the late George Ketterl, a beloved founding member of the CSUB Art faculty and a prominent artist.

Bravo’s painting, “We Once Stood Here Before You,” and Cardenas’ trio of ceramic works, “Midnight, Serenity and Aquamarine,” were selected among the work of 13 art majors in the Graduating Senior Exhibition titled, “Strata,” at the Todd Madigan Gallery at CSUB.

Katie Downs received an honorable mentiion for her paintings, “Calibrating” and “Classic Mini.”

Ketterl, a member of the Arts faculty until his death in 2010, is remembered for his selfless contribution to the education of thousands of art students, many who have gone on to become prominent artists themselves. He exhibited internationally, receiving commissions for his paintings in locations as varied as Florida and the Netherlands. He also received several grants and awards, including a Ford Foundation Fellowship, a Danforth Foundation Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts Award.

Guest Adjudicator Diana Nawi selected this year’s winners.

“It was a pleasure to see the work of the graduating class,” Nawi said. “I was impressed with the breadth of ideas and materials being explored. I was especially struck by the ambition and innovation of the work of Wilfredo Bravo and Julissa Cardenas. Using very different media, ceramics and painting, they both created compelling works of art that felt thoughtful, resonant and rigorous.”

Nawi is Associate Curator at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), where she has curated a number of exhibitions. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a master’s degree from the Graduate Program in the History of Art at Williams College.

The “Strata” exhibition is available to view until May 6 at the Todd Madigan Gallery, adjacent to the Doré Theatre at CSUB. Gallery hours are 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.
