CSUB Quality of Life Speaker Series Continues with Next Speaker: Bakersfield City Councilmember Andrae Gonzales

 California State University, Bakersfield’s School of Social Sciences and Education’s second spring Quality of Life event will feature Bakersfield City Council member Andrae Gonzales.  The event will be held from 6-7:15 p.m. on Monday, April 24, in the Student Union Multipurpose Room.
 
Gonzales will speak about his involvement with the Children First Campaign, homelessness, and other issues affecting quality of life in Bakersfield.
 
"We are honored to have Councilmember Andrae Gonzales speak at CSUB.  His concern for our community and commitment to its improvement are evident by his long history of nonprofit work and public service,” said Interim Associate Dean of Social Sciences and Education (SSE) Tanya Boone-Holladay. “As a community stakeholder, CSUB looks forward to the opportunity to strengthen its relationship with the City Council and provide a forum for ideas about improving the quality of life in Bakersfield."
 
Gonzales founded the Children First Campaign to keep kids off the street and focused on school. He was voted the Keep Bakersfield Beautiful Great American Cleanup Volunteer of the Year for 2016. The Councilmember currently works as the Executive Director of Stewards, Inc., a faith-based nonprofit organization that seeks to enhance the well-being and security of individuals and the community.
 
Children First believes that all Bakersfield children deserve an opportunity to succeed in life. The organization’s goal is to create prosperous communities and ensure that all children live in healthy, safe and nurturing neighborhoods that promote academic achievement and success to steer them away from negative influences, such as drugs, crime, violence and poverty.    
 
Gonzales represents Ward 2 on the Bakersfield City Council. He won the seat in the general election on November 8, 2016, and was later sworn in on December 14, 2016. Gonzales represented Trustee Area 4 on the Bakersfield City School District Board of Trustees in California from 2010 to 2016.
 
In August 2010, Bakersfield Life Magazine named Gonzales one of the  “10 people to watch” in Bakersfield. In 2010, he also he was named one of the nation’s top 40 leaders under 40 years old by the prestigious New Leaders Council.
