CSUB’s The Runner Newspaper Earns 14 Awards

The Runner student newspaper at CSU Bakersfield received 14 awards, including a third place for best newspaper, this weekend at the California College Media Association banquet. The Runner competed against other student newspapers at four-year universities in California with less than 10,000 students.

Fifteen Runner students and their faculty adviser, Jennifer Burger, attended the banquet in conjunction with the annual Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) National College Journalism Convention in San Francisco, held March 2 through 5.

“I am very proud of the staff of The Runner for producing high-quality work in so many areas of news media, from photography and stories to news videos, podcasting and social media reporting,” said Burger, a journalism lecturer at CSUB in addition to serving as faculty adviser to The Runner. “It shows how versatile our young journalists need to be to tell stories to an ever-changing audience, and how our students at CSUB are stepping up to that challenge.”

In addition to the 14 awards from the CCMA, The Runner also took home two Best of Show awards from the ACP. Competing against student newspapers from across the U.S. and Canada, The Runner won third place for Best Newspaper, less-than-weekly, and third place for Best Website, small school (less than 12,000 students).

The Runner publishes every other week during the semester at CSUB, and can be read on the web at therunneronline.com.
