CSUB To Host 46th Annual Lee Webb Math Field Day

California State University, Bakersfield will host the 46th annual Lee Webb Math Field Day for high school mathematics students on Saturday, March 4, at various locations on campus.

The event, which has been held annually since 1971, will take place at the Doré Theatre, Business Development Center (BDC) and Science III building. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Doré Theatre. The Awards and Closing Ceremony will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Doré Theatre.

“It is always a thrill to be reminded that there are hundreds of local students who are enthusiastic about mathematics and that they are eager to participate in the various events that comprise the Lee Webb Math Field Day,” said Dr. David Gove, CSUB Mathematics professor and Field Day Coordinator. “Since this is the 46th year of the event, it is now more than three times as old as some of the participants.”

This year, the event will consist of several competitions: Freshman-Sophomore Individual Medley, Junior-Senior Individual Medley, Freshman-Sophomore Team Medley, Junior-Senior Team Medley, Freshman-Sophomore Math Bowl, and the Junior-Senior Math Bowl. The Field Day also will include a little Math Humor, consisting of skits, poems, songs, and more.

In 2001, the CSUB Mathematics Department, which has hosted the event from its inception, voted to change the name of the event to the Lee Webb Math Field Day to honor Professor Webb, who was the principal director of the event in its first 29 years.

“We don't expect accolades as teachers. Our sole objective as university professors is to instill in K-12 students the love of mathematics that we in the CSUB Mathematics Department have for our subject,” Webb said. “It is so vitally important that as students in K-12 begin to think about a career, they realize the importance of Mathematics in their daily lives. We don't think about this often enough.

“The shortage of teachers in the STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is so critical at this time that the United States is searching the world for qualified students in ALL of those areas. Hopefully, the Lee Webb Mathematics Field Day will instill an interest in more and more students to consider majoring in a STEM field.”

This year, the Field Day will consist of several competitions: Freshman-Sophomore Individual Medley; Junior-Senior Individual Medley; Freshman-Sophomore Team Medley; Junior-Senior Team Medley; Freshman-Sophomore Math Bowl; and the Junior-Senior Math Bowl. The Field Day will also include a little Math Humor, consisting of skits, poems, songs and more.

Math Field Day is sponsored by CSUB’s Office of the President; California Math Council; Edison International; and the CSUB School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering (NSME).

High school student teams and individuals are eligible to register. Registration forms are available at https://www.csub.edu/math/MathFieldDay/index.html
