CSUB’s School of NSME to Host MATHCOUNTS

The 2017 MATHCOUNTS Program, hosted by the school of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering (NSME) at California State University, Bakersfield, will be held on the CSUB campus on Friday, Feb. 17.  The first round will begin in the Business Development Center at 2:40 p.m. and will end with the countdown round and awards at the Doré Theater at 6:30 p.m.

“MATHCOUNTS is always a fun day for me. It is gratifying to see young math students get excited about showing off their math skills,” said Dr. Becky Larson, CSUB faculty member and MATHCOUNTS Event Coordinator.

The Competition Series has four levels of competition – school, chapter, state and national. Each level is then comprised of four rounds – Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown Round.

The Sprint Round focuses on speed and accuracy. Students will have 40 minutes to complete 30 math problems without a calculator. The Target Round focuses on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning. In this round, students will receive four pairs of problems and have six minutes to complete each pair with the use of a calculator. The Team Round focuses on problem-solving and collaboration, and students will have 20 minutes to complete 10 math problems with the use of their calculator. The fourth and final is the Countdown Round, which focuses on speed and accuracy. Students have a maximum of 45 seconds per problem without a calculator.

Fourteen schools are registered for the competition, and about 135 students are expected to participate.

The MATHCOUNTS Foundation provides engaging math programs to U.S. middle school students of all ability levels to build confidence and improve attitudes towards math and problem solving. MATHCOUNTS was founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and CNA Foundation.

The chapter competition is sponsored by Kern County Science Foundation, Edison International, and CSUB Mathematics Department. The full list of winners from the competition will be available at https://mathcounts.org.
